My starter worked fine before I er uh didnt read the post about not letting the brushes pop out. I put it all back together 2 or 3 times and just did it again...all the brushes are in rite and the bare wires are not touching anything other than the brush and where they attach to the case and the insulated wires are as far from the case as I can get em...how do I bench test it now??

I should clairfy to look for a broken/burned through wire on the field wiring, brushes, and to the post.

So the next thing I would do is pull the armature out and check carefully for a broken wire. If you don't find one then it is probably time to take it to your local starter repairman.

That makes sense as the solenoid is just a relay. Are you sure the brushes are riding on the armature?

I checked by pushing them down with a screw driver to see if it made the armature harder to turn on each one,,and it did..I did turn one brush around as it looked like the 2 wires were crossed and none of the other 3 were crossed.

Ricko....Far South OKC where I have 5 acres.

From the other post it sounds like you connected it to a battery via jumper cables and got nothing. That means something inside is not right. Take it back apart and look it over closely.

Ricko,

Get some jumper cables, connect one end to your battery then connect one to the starter frame (mounting bolt sticking out held by nut....right?) and touch the other to the copper terminal while holding the starter with your foot, vice, sitting on it, etc. You will get a spark and it should jump and spin.

If all you get is a spark with no spin you still have a problem. Look again for shorts.

Ok hook up cables to battery..clamp one(+) to the stud on starter and the other(-) to the copper on the solenoid side or the stud on the starter?
