Congratulations !! Your Dad is probably smiling down at you right now. It looks like you've gotten good advice below so I'll leave it at that.

Ditto what bruce said on the head retorque after warm, not overfilling the rad, and Do turn the gas off.

and yes.. if you have new rings and sleaves. they will take just a bit of time to wear in.

if it continues to be a chimney after you've put a few hours of good hard work on it, do a wet/dry compression test to check the rings / valves..e tc. ( note: a bad oil ring may not show up on a comp test due to good comp rings.. etc.. )

Congrats! I just love it when a new rebuild starts.

A few things to watch for.....

Keep a close eye on start-up oil pressure.

Retorque the head bolts after you have run it up to operating temp for 30 minutes.

Do not overfill the radiator (tips 24 & 25, below)

Change the oil after an hour or so of run time.

Turn the gas off every time you turn the key off. (tip # 9)

Have fun & check back w/ progress reports & any questions.

Congrats. I'm sure your Dad would be proud. What a beautiful sound when she starts after all the Blood, Sweat and time you have put in. Not too mention the money side of it all.
