Adusting the valves on a 8N

Just put on the electronic ignition on an 8N front mount distributor and the tractor starts up right away. There is a lot of smoke coming out of the muffler and my Dad thinks the problem is with the adjustment of the valves. We check the oil and it doesn't seem to be burning oil but the oil pressure is low-about 15 at high throttle. There is a knock in the engine. What is the correct way to adjust the valves or does someone have a different idea what the problem is. Thanks and have a good day!!

I have a 51 8N that had a knock in it last week. It sounded upfront in the waterpump and timing cover area. Pulled the governor off to fix oil leak and discovered cam gear was loose on cam. It ran great but flopped around at idle low speeds. Knock was caused by gear hitting the boss on the governor mounting plate where the camshaft end play is measured. The fiber gear spins on the hub. Same thing happened about twenty years ago. Replacement was aluminum like the original this time. Fifty dollars. Just picked up the parts and it was nice to catch it while it was still running. I will assume it didn't knock after you got it back together 4 years ago but has recently started? Did you check the valve guides when you had it apart and replace the guide seals? Missadjusted valves would be a clicking tappet sound instead of knocking. I think a compression test is in order for the smoking. When you put bearings in did you rebuild the oil pump? Was the pressure better before?

No we did not rebuild the oil pump. The pressure was OK. We put in 30W oil and now we plan on putting in 50W. I believe a compression test is the way to go. Thanks for all the help!!

Ricky:

As the other posters have already told you, misadjusted valves will not cause knocks, low oil pressure or smoke.

What weight oil is in it?

Did you change the pistons and sleeves or just install new rings? If rings only, they may not have seated, which could cause the smoke but not the knock or low oil pressure. Re-ringing an engine with worn sleeves, especially one with thin steel sleeves is usually not worthwhile due to sleeve and piston wear and seating problems.

30W oil. The only thing we changed was the rings. Thanks for the help!

The tractor did not smoke after we did this but it has gotten worse. The smoke is a bluish color. My Dad feels the valves are not seating. Thanks for your response.

How about dry and wet compression tests. Could help rule out valves?

Oil pressure is not good - too low. Engine knock not good - likely bearings - rod or mains. I would put 50 weight oil in it and see what happens to oil pressure and knock. Other alternative is an engine tear down and rebuild - it's not likely coming from your valves.

Smoke coming from the exhaust pipe can have a lot of causes & valves out of adjustment isn't one of them. 15 lbs of oil pressure when hot & at high throttle is not good. A knock in the engine, low oil pressure & smoke are three things that all point to worn bearings: rods, mains or both. How long has it been doing this? Have you done anything else to the tractor recently other than the EI installation?

Ricky,

I doubt that a knock in the engine is the valves. The knock could be worn bearings, either rod or main.

Good luck,
Danny

I don't think your problem is valves. What color is the smoke? Oil is bluish color, overly rich carb adjustment shows block smoke, and a leaking head gasket will show white puffy smoke.
