Hi. I'm new to this forum and in need of some help. I have a Jubilee with a no start 'condition'. I started it a couple mornings ago after a substantial overnight rain. It caught and ran as usual for about a minute and then died. I attempted to restart and it would not. It acted low on fuel so I filled it without result. I have replaced the distributor cap as it was cracked from coil to #1. New plugs. Fresh oil. Clean air filter, fuel filter and sediment bowl. Points and rotor good. No start- oh I forgot to mention the horrific backfires. I did the unmentionable and attempted to pull it without result. Coil wire does seem a little loose at the cap. I am going to check for spark at the coil and plugs. When I pulled the old plugs they were fouled with fuel. I pulled the starter to have it rebuilt as it was dragging and when I removed it the teeth were knocked off - flywheel o.k. This tractor used to run without missing a beat. I don't know much about it beyond its age and that it was converted to 12v about 20 years ago. No documentation beyond the shop manual. Sorry about the long post and thank-you up front for your suggestions and advice.

Thank-you Sean! I checked the wires and had 3 and 4 wrong. The tractor started but- and this is a big but- I have very low power and poor throttle response. Could this be related to gap at the points? Any ideas?

Have the firing order right? Should be 1-2-4-3 Double check the wires...

OK. I spent a few hours this afternoon working on my Jubilee without any luck. To date I have replaced the plugs (gapped to .025), replaced the plug and coil wires, replaced the points (gapped to .025) and condensor, replaced the distributor cap, cleaned the fuel bowl and filter, cleaned the air filter, and cleaned the carb. I have good fuel to the carb and spark at the distributor cap and at each plug. I have made sure the inside of the distributor is clean and dry. I did have a small amount of sediment in the carb and an obstruction in the jet. I used an ohm meter and the coil has 0 ohms resistance at the contacts. The battery is producing 13.4 volts at the posts. I did try a small amount of starting fluid at the air intake with no result. The engine tries to fire but will not catch and hold- only enough to kick out the starter. Is there anything else I can try or have overlooked?

Thank-you for the suggestions- I was afraid that it may be a timing gear or governor issue. Saturday morning looks like the time to start testing and drying.

Cracked distribuitor cap? I'm thinking -waterlogged distribuitor innards-.

Once you verify or exclude that, do a spark check..

My 850 refused to start after being left uncovered in a heavy rain. I had to remove the breaker plate on the distributor and soak up the water out of the bottom of the distributor with paper towels. After I got everything dried off, it started just fine.

Check for spark, it may just be your ignition switch.
