I put a new ground strap on but its thicker than the positive cable the last(moron) owner used for ground and the bolt under the battery box is too short to use..can I ground it to the block using one of the long head studs I used or is that not a good idea?

I'm with the others.. use something other than a headbolt/stud.

I like the steering box as a strapping point..

I agree with the others. Do not pull a head bolt or use a head bolt for the ground strap. Steering box bolt is best location. Do you have the original 6V electrical system? 6V battery? If so, positive cable from the positive terminal on the battery is supposed to go to ground. If you have a 12V negative ground conversion, then its a different story.

Use a Bell housing bolt close to the starter. Grounding at the dash/battery support was no one of fords better ideas.

Almost any bolt but a head bolt will work. The reason a head bolt is a bad idea it because it need to be torqued and with a ground strap there it can not be torqued like is need to be. You can use the oil filter bolt or any of the many other bolts but please don't use a head bolt

It should be grounded to the steering box.

What about another nut on the long head stud -- assuming there's enough thread above the first nut to hold both the strap and second nut?

Still a bad idea.. thare are plenty of places to bolt the ground strap to OTHER than the head.

DON'T loosen one of the head bolts just for that reason, plus inseting the relatively SOFT terminal under the bolt head. Get a longer bolt for the other location, and clean things up on the parts that are sandwiched together at that location to make a low resistance ground to the casting!

Air filter canister mounting bolts should be the correct length. Might try switching one of them with the shorty if you don't have time to buy a longer bolt.

Just a thought.
