What's the difference between the gearing on the 9, 2, and 8Ns?

That is, are the three speeds on the first two machines spaced out with effectively the same low and high gears with just closer ratios for the four speed?
Or is it more the case that with the 8N you've got a final gear that's miles higher than 3rd gear in the others?
Man...now I've confused myself. How about this. What's the relative speeds in each gear for both 3 and 4 speed tractors...?

Thanks for the useful info -- as per usual, Boy, looks like that Sherman is a useful unit for wringing out the most from the old girls!

Tested my 9N awhile back

Conducted this test with the shredder on and in the down position. With the PTO off. Used my handheld GPS to get the speeds. Running at full throttle.
1st and reverse 3.8 MPH
2nd 4.8 MPH
3rd 11.1

motorV8N..... ..surprizingly enuff, both the 3-speed 2N/9N and the 4-speed 8N diffy gear ratio is 6.66-to-1. But unlike automobile trannys, hi-gear is NOT DIRECT 1:1. ALL N-tranny gears are "indirect" and that is the reason NONE of the N-gear speeds match. And the 3-speed 2N/9N hi-speed is slower than the slightly more powerful 4-speed 8N hi-speed..... ...Dell

I had to take a look at the FO-4 manual to see how that all works out. I had forgotten that on BOTH the 3-speed and 4-speed tractors NO gear is "direct-drive". That's somewhat unusual for manual transmissions.

I never even thought about the 1:1 ratio . Looking at Pooh Bears post it looks like about a 20:1 ratio on fourth . I guess I could do some math and firgure out zachary what 3rd ratio is on the 9n , but it looks close to 25:1

With a step up/down sherman ,
9n lowest speed @1000 rpm is 1.18 mph
9n highest speed @2200 rpm is 18.12 mph
8n lowest speed @1000 rpm is 1.22 mph
8n highest speed @ 2200 rpm is 23.12 mhp

This is from a Sherman ad , and I am assuming with modern 11.2-28 tires equal to the size of the ad time table .

For those interested heres the link from John Smiths site .

My 46 2N 3speed with Sherman overdrive has a top road speed of 20 mph in 3rd high range. However it has larger 12.4 tires which would account for it going 20 mph as in regards to 18+ with the smaller tires which was origionally on these tractors.

I found this in the New Holland 8N manual:

1.) Low (First) 73.33 to 1 2.54mph@1500rpm 3.40mph@2000rpm

2.) Plowing (Second) 57.04 to 1 3.28mph@1500rpm 4.37mph@2000rpm

3.) Cultivating (Third) 41.45 to 1 4.51mph@1500rpm 6.02mph@2000rpm

4.) High (Fourth) 19.86 to 1 9.40mph@1500rpm 12.54mph@2000rpm

5.) Reverse 44.64 to 1 4.9mph@1500rpm 5.58mph@2000rpm

Couldn't find info for the 9N and 2N.

I wonder if 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears are the same ratios as the 8N.
