My lift has always worked pretty good. Over the last year it has started jerking when you are raising it. It comes up like a floor jack, one pump at a time. Other than that it works pretty good for 50+ years old. Am I in for some major money or is this a simple fix?

Thanks Zane. I was kinda looking for some logic to the problem. I will keep using it until it starts to cause me problems like not lifting. It seems to be getting worse lately. I lost my F04 manual. Maybe I can find it before I need it. Is there any better reading for rebuilding it? I see they sell a video here.

The N pump has two scotch yokes that push and pull two pistons each. If one of the scotch yokes breaks it will jump coming up but may run like that for years and still do the job. Just a lot slower.

Also a valve spring in one of the valve chambers can break and cause the same symptoms but much less likely to because the valves will still work usually even with broken springs.

third party image

I swapped out the PTO for the 1-3/8 shaft about 5 years ago and put 90W in it. I've been working it hard the last month. The county put in an 18 inch sewer line and took out 4 LARGE treees. They contracted a tree service to drop them and cut them into 18 inch long pieces for me. Saturday I loaded two 30 inch diameter red oak pieces on the carry all and it lifted it OK but it would fall when the son-in-law got on. It is a little bumpy ride sometimes when you pull the lever and the front end bounces up and down until it gets to the set height. I guess I'll let it ride for a while. Thanks
PS I had the sewer contractor load a 13 foot log from the base of that tree in my 10000 lb dump trailer to take it to the mill. After looking at it squat the trailer, I told him to take it back out. Those things are heavy.

Soundguy is right. Pulsing is common and it's due to wear and the pump valves sticking a bit. You may want to drain the lift oil and go with the suggested Ford formula. I got mine at TSC but you have to look carefully to make sure it's specifically for Ford tractors. These tractors have bronze components that are degraded by some oil compositions more commonly available.

The right oil in mine reduced pulsing a lot and made cold weather performance much better.

As long as it is lifting what you want it to lift, and staying up pretty good.. i wouldn't do anything to it..imho. When it doesn't do one of the the things that i mentioned.. then tear into it.

Those old pumps knock and pulse as they wear.

What type of oil ya got in it?
