Haven't even met my mechanical mistress yet and already I'm straying and being unfaithful. Saw a Ferguson TEA 20 on the weekend, more because of proximity to my place than anything else.
It seemed to be in good shape except for an engine noise that made itself apparent only after it was running for 8 or 10 minutes. Something between valve train clatter and an honest to goodness knocking. Seemed to be coming from the right side in the vicinity of the exhaust manifold. Pretty certain it isn't in the bottom of the block and it didn't seem to affect power or driveability at all. Now, the owner said the manifold face was "built up with weld" to fix a crack but I can't see the repair with the manifold in place.

Compression is pretty consistent at 115, 110, 110, 115 across the board, there's no oil in the rad or water in the oil and power seems good.

Can anyone tell me of any highs and lows of the the Standard engine in these beasts? I'm completely out of my element having only just become familiar with Fords.
I'm hoping some of you have multiple mechanical mistresses and can comment. I've had some helpful feedback over on the HF side but I thought I'd run this by you folks too.

The tractor has had a lot of those things done that can nickel and dime ya to death (ingnition, brakes, water pump, rad, clutch, ok tires, full fluid change, half decent wiring, etc). Tin is very straight with no rust that I can see and the paint job is even halfway decent (though not as colourful as those 8s!). Someone did make a comment about watching for tranny case corrosion. It starts on half a spin and while it will puff a bit of black when jabbed, there's no blue in sight.

I suspect parts availability isn't anywhere near on par with Fords either although I hear some stuff is around.

Anyone care to comment on TEA 20s in general or my mysterious engine noises is particular? I'm kind of hoping it might be the bodged manifold crack. Certainly the fact there's no noise until the engine's good and warm is interesting. Also of note is that when you cut the iginition the noise stops immediately even before the engine has spun down to a stop.

Look the block over good. I've been told that those old Fergys tend to have cracks. I kinda like those too. They're supposed to be nice machines if you get a good one.

sounds like wrist pin
you can check this by pulling one plug at a time.
if the noise goes away when you pull a plug wire, that piston has a bad wrist pin
