So, got the brush hog attached and going - went out into the pasture and started mowing and munching stuff up.....saw things scurrying away in the grass....then mowed down some nasty brambles.....as I went over it I was picturing an animal family of some sort getting munched to bits...thankfully not.

I have a strange ambigious feeling when I mow stuff down....one moment I am happy to have cleared the area....then I think about all the critters that were munched up....guess they become food for other critters..... ..and I am sure a lot more would be lost of there was a fire..... oh well, off to cook my pork roast for dinnerthird party image

When i mow, I will try to do so so as to allow wildlife warning or escape time. IE.. mow from one side over to allow animals to 'migrate' away from mower on subsequent passes. Also, if i see an animal scurry out of the bush as i pass.. If i can miss it without driving way off track or damage my machine.. i will usually try. About the only animals I will really go out of my way to avoid are the slo wmoving helpless ones.. like gopher tortises.. not that I love them or anything.. i actually hate them as if i let them on my property they try to dig buroughs.. an dthe horses don't like holes in the apsture.. however.. even though i hate them.. i know they can't move fast enough to escape the spinning death.. and I just don't feel right mowing them over if i can help it.. IE.. I'll leave an uncut strip and pick it up at the end if i can avoid killing one... In the past I've seen 'em too late to help them.. and not much to do but keep mowing and say sorry.

I did the same thing - when I mowed over a bramble bush I did it a bit at a time to allow anything in there to get out - went back and checked later and there was no evidence of any dead critters.

I have decided to keep a couple of the bramble thickets - to provide some berries for the birds and cover for the quail and other critters during the winter - early next year Ill munch them down as there is a lot of cover by the pond for them.

One year at our other property I mowed and left a 10 ft strip down the middle for the kids to observe as a nature project throughout the spring and summer to see what kind of things grew and what bugs etc lived there - there were a lot of low growing flowers, some tall stuff and lots of bees etc flitting around in there.....then the neighbour came and 'helped' as he thought my mower had broken and kindly mowed it all down for methird party image

One of my cousins cycled a wee fawn through his haybine one year and has also wasted a few turkey poults with the same machine.

I told him that meant he'd have to skip deer and turkey hunting that year to atone, but the varmint went out and killed some anyway.

One of my customers asked me how I could kill something as beautiful as a deer, so had to explain to her that it's mostly a matter of maintaining a good sight picture and trigger control. ;o)

As I grow older (now 60), I find myself having some of the same thoughts. When I was a kid hunting was fun, now I don't think I could pull the trigger on any animal & certainly not a pretty Deer or Elk, but I will eat the meat of both with no remorse at all.

I've got a yard full of young roosters, all the hens are in the hen pen/house.

Dayum thangs are eating all the collards that I plant.

I think we will start having Sunday evening beer can chickens on the grill.

I should be able to catch them with the .22 rifle, or the 410 double barrel.

A couple of years back the Ole Lady's brother had my .22, not Dad's auto, but Granddaddy's single shot down at the pond trying to shoot water moccasins.

He kept missing.

I said let me see that.

That snake came back up and opened his mouth, and I put one down his throat.

Nope that didn't have anythang to do with my 8N but I did mention it.

Lots of those "critters" will be happy to gnaw into yer house this winter, and then gnaw into yer wiring in yer house, and burn up you, and yer family while yall sleep.

Make sure you have plenty of rat poison put out in yer house.

Everybody has to eat, even the buzzards...

Off the record, I lean that "tree hugger" way myself quite a bit these days.

But I haven't been hungry, and without, in a long time now.

I grew up a squirrel hunter.

My Ole Lady wouldn't ever eat a bite of squirrel dumplings ifn she knew that was what she was eating..

Like I said we ain't hungry, but this store bought food, that has been fed all them harmones, and such, has made US grow off big too.

I used to be a skinny one, back when I ate organic food, instead of that grocery store stuff.
