I purchased a 9N Ford several months ago and have been putting it back together. Couple weeks ago I finally got it started but did not have any oil pressure. The gentleman who helped me with the electical said he suspected a broken oil pickup tube and then started talking repair costs. Rather than spend the kind of money he was talking about I started looking here and discovered all I had to do was drain the oil to check the pickup tube. The pick up tube was ok which was a great relief. Additional reading lead me to believe the problem was the oil pump needed to be primed. Most everyone was in agreement that the best way to prime the pump was to remove the plug and spring assembly up by the water pump. They stated to be careful not to drop the spring and rod while removing. I did all of that no problem. Then when I was putting it back together guess what I lost the spring and rod. Nobody told me to be careful putting it back together. Now my question is where did my spring an rod go to and how do I go about retrieving it. All help is appriciated.

Is the spring on rhe head side of the hose? Radiator over full? Should be to the top of the fins...The extra room is for expansion..If you do any bush hogging blow all the debris out of the radiator..

Well I got my oil pump primed yesterday and got the tractor started. I am very pleased with the results. I am running about 20 lbs of pressure at an idle and about 25 lbs when I was running around on my property.

I now have another problem you may be able to help with. While driving around on property the tractor overheated and I don"t know why. When I purchased tractor it did not have a thermostat so I put a new one in. This was my first experience putting a thermostat in a radiator hose and wasn"t to sure of things but I had read on this site how it was suppose to go so I think I got that right. Any ideas as to what the problem may be. Should I take the thermostat out and run without it. Again all help is appriciated.

Thanks Pete

I want to thank all of you who responded. I found my spring. It wasn't down by the crankshaft pulley, but it also did not go internal. I found it wedged between the engine and the front mount distributor. I found it while trying to figure out how to get around the pulley on the right side of the engine. Uou will probably be hearing from me some more as I continue to work on this project. Again thanks.

If hobo did not find it for you, do the mirror and flashlight trick to see if it is laying in the hole where it is sposed to be.

Perhaps under the front crankshaft pulley... it's pretty confined down there!

Try "fishing" with a small mechanic's magnet with a flexible stem.

Thanks Bob The spring was in the hole when I lost it and I am assuming you are talking about the area I see when I am facing tractor. Do you still think it would be there.

If its not in the hole its spose to go in you dropped it, I don't think its possible for it to fall into the engine, you musta dropped it and its under the crank pulley somewhere.
