Need some information in wiring up the taillight...third party image

I have one wire coming from the tailight. Does it attach to the negative side of the light switch? If so, I cannot get it to work. I've tried several bulbs to make sure.

I have the 12 volt electronic ignition system on the tractor, and it is wired different than any regular 6 volt or 12 conversion setup.

I have the front headlights wired to the negative side of the switch, and they work fine, but No Go on the taillight. I get continuity from the taillight to the light switch

Nice picture of new painted tail-lite bracket. Guess what? that shiny new paint is yer "problem. Paint is an electrical "INSULATOR". Usually solved by "star-washers". Unfortunately, star-washers eventually cause that nasty ol'RUST which that shiny paint keeps away. Best way to "solve" yer lack of ground return (necessary to make yer litebulb circuit work) is a separate ground return wire.

Why don't you have "head-lite" ground problems? You probably "scratched the paint" with yer installation bolts and have created a ground return path thru the sheetmetal. Guess what? yer also gonnna have head-lite rusty ground problems.

Me? I'd buy some 16ga "zip-cord" from the hardware store that they sell for extension cords and replacement appliance wiring. It is perfectly adequate and keeps the wiring "neat" and together. And NO it don't matter which wire is used for ground or power from yer lite switch.

Good grounds are a "MUST" for 6-volt operation..... ..Dell, yer self-appointed lite-meister

All lighting is wired by a single hot lead to the bulb. The lights pull their ground from the metal it is attached to. From the looks of your pic, I see nice shiny paint on all surfaces - this will keep the light from getting a ground. Scuff up the area directly bellow the bolt and the nut holding the light to the bracket, and the bracket to the fender. You may also have to remove the fender to scuff up the paint where the fender attaches to the axle trumpet.

Or - you can run another wire from a good ground source and attach it under the light bracket bolt.

Dan

If you truly have a negative ground system ( you said 12v and EI ).. then your lamps and lamps switch will be wired to the POSITIVE side of the battery.

The negative side of the battery is continous with GROUND.. which is what your fenders and the lamp are grounded to. Thus negative to gorund = no current flow to your lamps.

Wire your lamp switch instead to tractor battery positive.

If that's what you meant and just typed it wrong, then i suspect you have a bad ground at the lamp shell. Wire up a temporary ground wire from the batttery to the lamp to check this. if this si so you can either remove the fender and lamp and polish ground connections ( not my first choice ).. or just run a 'helper' ground wire with your power feed wire and use a star washer under the lamp mount bolt to help it 'find' ground path.

be carefull about your polarities.. .. negative / positive means something different based on your ground plane.
