I have a 1950 8N and replaced the clutch , pilot bearings etc... I am tying to put the flywheel back on but I can't find anywhere in the manual's that tells me if the flywheel will line up to be mounted in only one way or not . I have put it on and taken it off twice and I can't believe that I lucked out both times and did not have to rotate it 180 deg to make it fit ! My flywheel has timing marks on it so I want to make sure we put it back right the first time . Is there only one way the the flywheel will go on ???
Thanks As Always
Alan

I recently had the flywheel off of my 52 8N It had timing marks at two locations 180 degrees apart. Either way the flywheel went on the timing marks would show and would be at the right place for proper timing. I bet yours is the same if you look. If not then remove all your spark plugs and crank the engine over by hand till you feel air being forced from number 1 cylinder this means that your somewhere in your compression stroke. Since the flywheel can only go on two ways, install the flywheel with the timing marks close to the pointer and it should be correct. Hope this helps.

You are right ! I did not realize that there were 2 sets of marks until I wrote this post .I did clean the 1 set of marks I found so that I could see them when I was doing the timing and when I went to put the flywheel back on I saw the marks were dirty again ! HMMMMM MM????? ???? I also found in the IT manual later that there should be 2 sets of marks !
Thanks for the response Alan

I don't know if the flywheel will only go on in one position, but there's a trick for putting it on right if it might.

Take out your #1 spark plug and poke a screwdriver down into the cylinder so it's resting on top of the piston. Have a strong friend turn the engine gradually until the screwdriver climbs as high as it can and starts to drop back down. Turn it back until the screwdriver is at the top again.

The #1 piston is now at Top Dead Center.

Position the flywheel so the timing mark is aimed at whatever orifice lets you see the mark when it's assembled (I don't have an 8N, so have no idea where that is). The mark likely won't be exactly lined up, but it doesn't need to be. Just so it's not about 90 degrees away.

That's where you want to bolt the flywheel on.
