Adventures in planting flowers

Yesterday morning I went out armed with my seed packs, bulbs, and planting parters (two little just hatched goslings). Going to beautify the outhouse and such by planting pretty flowers and such around them. Outhouses always need beautification.

So I planted, and they dug, and we all had a good time playing in the dirt. As I walked away from the outhouse having planted beauty, I heard this interesting ripping cracking sound. I turned and saw parts of my just built aviary flying through the air. Great I thought, those flexed pvc pipes I used as a frame just let go. Darn. But wait a sec, that looks weird. I don't remember planting anything like that. Hey! There's a tree laying down there, right where I just planted flowers! Seems the neighbors big old dead tree just didn't like my beautification project, and expressed itself on the subject. Scared the fowl silly. They all went and immediately ate their eggs while flapping all around the place.

Fascinating what the falling tree didn't do. It bounced off the edge of the barn/shed, just clipping the edge of the aviary, and snaked its way down between the trees, the aviary and the swingset. Landing smack dab right where I and my feathered friends had just been planting.

My neighbor has nasty trees I learned. This isn't the first time they've fallen down right where people were standing. Seems they just don't like humans. First Lynn, then Tim, and now me. Almost got Lynn.

On the N side, I did verify that the 8N just is not able to pull a tree with a 3 foot thick trunk up a hill and off the remains of the fence. Looks like I'm going to have to ask a neighbor to come over with a Deere and do it for me. Oh the shame!

I think you may have dug your holes too deep around that trunk to plant those flowers!

You're a lucky guy... Those trees can come
down in a hurry. I had a similar experience
in '96. I was out raking leaves, it was
windy. I went in for a drink, and moments
later heard a loud crash outside. I thought
there was a car accident out front. Well there
was, sort of, a big cherry tree snapped off
and squashed my poor beloved Yukon -- totaled (RIP) :( Part of the tree was laying right where I was raking, just moments earlier. So even though
my truck lost its life, I felt somewhat lucky..
