Ford 2n 3-point hitch question

Hello, I have a 2N, my first tractor and I enjoy owning it. Being new to old machines I have a question about the 3-pt. hitch. When I set the height for a blade, bush-hog, etc., it does not stay in place. It will leak down and when I pull up on the control, initially I get no response then it almost jumps up way to far and fast. I can't believe this is the way it is designed to operate. Is there something that needs to be replaced and/or adjusted? Thanks for your time.

Ray

I can fix the stay in one place problem with one of my Zane Thang position control devices but it sounds like you may have some dirty oil in the lift/drive train that needs to be changed in order to prevnet the sticking control valve that may be causing it to jump up rather than come up as demanded or commanded.

See the link below for ordering information on the Zane Stuff.

Congratulations on the purchase of the N.

The archives are loaded with questions and comments about the lift. Since you are new to this machine I would suggest that you consider taking the inspection cover off and investigating any potential leaks to the system. It's basically all visual inspection and it will give you the chance to get familar with the inner workings of the system. DO NOT stick your hand in there when it is running!!!

At that time you can inspect the condition of the oil and potentially any sludge that may have built up over time. Cleaning this out before an oil change will give you better performance and longer life. All suggestions that have been made are good ones.

Best purchase that I made for my 2N so far was a service manual. They are available here on this site.

Welcome to the N board!

My 9N has the same problem occasionally. When it does, I check the dipstick for the rear end and find it milky - water has gotten in.

I go to NAPA and order a number 65-205, if memory serves. It's 5 gallons of MINERAL OIL, 90 wt. The NAPA dealers will tell you they don't have mineral oil, until you quote the number to them - then they order it.

Then I change the oil. For a while, until the oil gets water in it again, the lift works smoothly and holds position pretty well. Of course it doesn't actually "hold position" in the sense a later tractor does - for that you need a Zane Thang. But it doesn't drift down nearly as fast, and its operation is smooth.

Try it. You'll like it.

Thank, Peter. Ordered some limit chains. Will try to find a Zane Thang.

The 9N/2N did not have position control as did the 8N. All the way up or all the way down is pretty much how yours works. You can add the Zane Thang to get position control. Your tractor was designed for plowing (draft control) and using other attachments on the 3 point was not part of that design.
