My 1996 Toyota Camry smokes a bit on startup after sitting for more than a few house (allowed to cool). What sort of things should I be looking at? Valves? I'm only loosing about 1/4 quart of oil per 3K miles at each oil change, so it's not burning or leaking much oil.
Where do I start? Or do I just drive it as is.

It has 129K Miles.
Thanks

TooTall

Could be a number of things causing it to smoke upon start up. 1/4 Qt in 3K?????

Sounds like a tempest in a tea pot to me!

Zane (or other),

What is a "tempest in a tea pot"?

I'm not familiar with that saying?
Are you saying not to bother fiddling with it considering the minimal oil loss?
Thanks,

TooTall

I agree with the valve stem seals most likely being the culprit. If it's not using any more oil than that I'd drive it and make sure not to look behind me when I started it.

If the smoke is black, it's probably oil in the cylinder(s). The most probable leakage point is the valve stem seals, but there could be others.

If the smoke is white, it's probably water. That could mean a cracked head or block, or something as simple as a head gasket that's blown or head bolts loose.

Try this: Get your wife to donate an old stocking or panty hose. Rubber band it over the exhaust pipe, to make a kind of "sock filter." Let the car sit until you're sure it'll smoke on startup, then start it up. Before things get hot enough to melt the stocking, shut it down. remove the filter, and smell it. You can usually smell very vividly the odor of burning oil, or the acrid smell of burning anti-freeze. That should tell you where to look for the culprit.

By the way, if it's oil and you're satisfied with the 'oil mileage' you are getting, forget it. If it's water, fix it - thing rust inside engines!

The timiong belt is new - I changed it myself about 5K ago. It has been smoking for about 10K. The old belt was changed as a preventaive measure. It was still in great shape when removed.

Thanks for all the help everyone.

We have a '94 camry. One time it was suddenly hard to start. When it did start, it ran badly and smoked. Turned out to be a couple missing teeth on the timing belt...

Doesn't sound exactly like your problem, but bad timing can cause smoke...

Good luck.

BTW, the '94 has over 230K and still going strong:-)

I'M not en expert on tyvodas, but conventional wisdom would be valve stem seals.
