I had a '51 Studebaker Starlight Coupe with a push-button radio that did not work. It was the easiest thing to remove I could imagine. Two screws and it descended out of the dash on rails and disconnected from the power-circuit simultaneously. (Internal speaker.) I took it to the airport and handed it to the avionics guy and asked him if he thought he could figure it out.
The next day he handed it back to me along with the never-filled-out warranty card he'd found inside. It was a 5-tube Philco and after he replaced a bad condenser it played beautifully!

Cost me a 6-pack of Beck's bier. third party image

And Britchlee...those "valves" you talk of....we Yanks call them "tubes" or "vacuum tubes". third party image (Of course the British term is much more accurate.)

Should you need advice on valve/tube radios you may wish to contact my dad who is a 'fundi' at fixing these things.

I have the radio from the IH S120 which is all boxed up and ready to be sent over to the UK for him to have a go at fixing.....

Just last week he sent me an e mail all excited as he found an old occiliscope or some such device at a junk yard...they were going to throw it away so he got it for pennies (mind you, Brit pennies are now worth a lot more than US ones third party image) took it home and fixed it in a day..apparently it is a very valuable piece of equipment.

His last purchase was a signal generator to provide variable signals to test radios...his first e bay purchase.

I am constantly in awe of my Dad's knowledge and he was a great help with fixing my 8N even tho he was in the UK!

He helped me track down a short circuit on one of my old bikes over the phone!

Old school knowledge cant be beat.

I think I would call that vibrator, an oscillator, and if you had the numbers you might just be able to find one.

That is really nice. I used to have this 1962 Thunderbird. I bought it in '95 with only 42,000 miles on it.

But I had some personal financial reverses that forced me to sell it so I could get a car I could drive every day.

Those were the days when cars really had some personality - you could tell the year and model and make just by the light, profile and front grille - now all cars seem to have turned into similar looking blobs. I have met old guys who just take one look at the car and know what year it is, engine size and so on....try doing that with a new Honda or Toyota.

Mind you, I saw a very early Toyota Corolla or something like that - it actually had quite a classic look to it.

Sigh ... back when you could still call a car beautiful. I was born 40 years too late.

Brings back memories. My first car was a '54, black with a white top.
Thanks for the pic.

Really nice car. Do you still have the original radio in there? I have a radio I took off from a FORD dash from about that era. It has a round face in the front with the controls. Of course it is tube type with a multivibrator to turn the DC into AC voltage(or perhaps pulsating dc-not sure which). Someone told me it was from a 1955 model. Is yours round faced? I"m trying to figure out the exact year in case I want to sell it. The only thing I believe it needs is the multivabrator.

1955 ford pass. cars have radio like you describe. 54s are different. I assume it is 6 volt?? 56s I can't remember but think they are different than 55.

You are right The round dial is from a 55 Ford. The 56's were different.

Yes, I believe it would be a 6 volt unit since the tubes are in the 6 series of numbers. Tested all the tubes OK. There is a resistor in the power supply section that is burned out. I cannot make out any of the colored coded bands which designate its resistance. Of course the vibrator is bad and simply cannot operate it. It has a really beautifully chromed face. The buttons. dial, controls all work well. Hopefully someday I'll stumble on a vibrator and schematic.

Joe,
Carefully take that ol' vibrator apart & clean up the contact points inside - may be a challenge, but might can be done if you're clever. Similar to ignition points in a tractor, just more than one set in there. Desperate times call for desperate measures...I doubt they make those any more.

Mine has a rectangular face with the push button station selector - it is a valve radio and only gets AM of course. If you want I can send you a picture of it if you pass on your e mail address.

It is different than yours , that"s what I wanted to know as it makes it a different year. Another poster said it was from a 1955 passenger car. Thanks

Love that colour. Just a little richer than the Tahoe Turquois on my 66 Mustang I used to have.
