Electronic ignition will not fire???

I have a 49 8n with the front mount distributor converted to 12v. I have had it like this for about 8 years and now I have converted it to the Pertronics electronic ignition and now I have no fire to any plug. When I did this I replaced the starter switch, starter relay and the plugs just because I thought it would be a good idea. Has anyone had this same problem? I have checked and double checked my installation of the electronic ignition and I am pretty confident its installed correct.

So you went from a running 12v system with points.. to a non running system with electronic ignition.

Was it worth it?

Do you have the power to the EI installed AFTER any resistors that might have been in line with the ignition coil?

No. I have the red wire from the module going to the + side of the coil, the black wire of the module going to the - side of the coil. One wire from the ignition switch going to the + side of the coil. Mark

Is this a side distribuitor N.. or is it a front mount with a round coil kit?

Mark..... ..you write..... ."I have the red wire from the module going to the + side of the coil, the black wire of the module going to the - side of the coil. One wire from the ignition switch going to the + side of the coil"..... ..guess what? the 4-nipple frontmount distributor has a squarecan ignition coil has ONLY 1-WIRE.

And your original ignition switch "ON" wire goes thru the "infamous ballast resistor" to the top of the squarecan coil single terminal. So it is very difficult to have a red + wire and a black - wire going to both sides of the 1-terminal squarecan ignition coil. Isn't that amazing???

Check yer wiring AGAIN, 'cuz as you described it, it is IMPOSSIBLE..... ....respectfully, Dell yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Dell
I have the electronic ignition kit with the round coil.

Mark..... ..I flunked mindreading, just ask my ex-wife. You distinctly said that you had a 1949 8N with a frontmount distributor; which came from the factory with a 1-terminal squarecan ignition coil. NO WHERE did you say you squandered yer money for Petronix basterized roundcan conversion. I ain't a mindreader.

I can change a whole lotta old fashioned ignition points for the price of an electronic ignition that is sensitive to errant voltage spikes and temperatures and loose connections. I am NOT IMPRESSED with Petronix frontmount electronic ignitions. They SUCK.

I know and understand electronic ignitions. I built my first electronic ignition from scratch in 1963 for my 1956 Dodge D-500 Hemi-V8. ..... ...respectfully, Dell, retired Electronics Engineer

Dell Whats up with you! Two replies by you and two attempts by you to belittle someone. I don't get it with you. You need to chill a little. I haven't been on this board for over a year and I come back and you are doing the same crap as you did then trying to make someone feel stupid or below you. You defenitely know alot about these tractors but you definitely need to learn to be a little more humble. If it pains you to help someone then don't.

Anyone who has electronics experience knows that the are less than 5.00 worth of parts in the module.Furthermmore I get to laughing since my Ford tractor starts in cold weather with its 3.00 points.Ive run the same points for 15 years with no trouble. If an electronic ignition flops when hay is down the hay will be lost.Ignition points do get hot during operation an oxides form that insulate the points. This happened once while I was baling hay.I noticed the ammeter wasnt moveing during cranking.Cleaned the points with a pocket knife and went back to work.It is a problem to keep the engine running once it starts in zero weather because of the lousy gas we get now.Dell is one of these fellows who Suffers no fools "I tend to be that way my self.I am amazed when fellows in middle age dont have knowledge I had a 15 years of age.

Sounds like this is what you have (see pix). Previous page of instructions says,"A minimum primary resistance of 3 ohms is required".****
This means coil plus ballast resistor (unless coil has 3 ohms stand alone, then no ballast needed).

This ballast, if needed must be in BLACK wire, NOT Red wire and NOT both black & red.
If in Red, module does not get sufficient voltage. If coil is less than 3 ohms & you do NOT have ballast resistor, then you have probably already 'let the smoke out' of the Pertronix module and maybe coil as well.

JMOR, Those Instructions and the Pictorial are electrically correct but electronically challenged.

IMO the Red wire should be connected directly to the Switch, same side as the coil, such that coil inductive spikes (noise) are not common to the module's Vcc. This will become a problem if the Coil Wire (resistance) & its connections are flawed/Bad. 2ZWUDZ, 1. The Only electrical Connection you have not checked is "GROUND". The Timing TAB Screw must be Very Tight, it Provides Ground between the Mounting Plate & Distributor Body. The Mounting Ear's Bolts must also be Tight. 2. Make sure you do not have any Resistance(like old Ballast R) between Ignition Switch and the Coil +ve (assumes wired Per Kit Instructions)

It's NOT impossible, IF he's bought the Pertronix kit with the dummy square-can coil adapter, and the "round-can" coil.
