Got my 49 8n all rebuilt and engine painted and finally rigged up a small gas tank to run her on til I get the hood painted....turned on the key and choked her and she started right up...smoked quite a bit from all the oil I dumped down the sparkie holes while I was dry running it to check the oil pressure but....it would not quit when I turned off the key.. new ignition switch..new 12 volt conversion with in line resistor..12 volt coil..new cap, rotor and points and condensor...had to shut off the gas to make her die..shes been sleepin so long she got all excited and would not give up. Started her up again after adding water and noticed what looked and felt like oily water bubbles comming out of #4 sparkie..around the threads I guess..I thought I was very meticulous about torquing the stud nuts down 50-55 ft lbs in the order shown..what can the problem be besides the obvious head gasket..I had the block decked and the head ground professionally.

Some of the head studs on 8-ns go into the wet water jackets on the block. If you don't use a good thread sealent you can get water in to your cylinders. I don't know why everyone fails to mention this. I put an aftermarket head on my 8-n three years ago. I torqed the head once and have never had a problem.I use this tractor in a weedabatement business. It is a working tractor.

Ricko,

You wrote "bubbles comming out of #4 sparkie..around the threads I guess". Do you mean the bubbles are coming out around the sparkplug? If so did you tighten it? If so either a bad plug or plug gasket.

Ricko..... ...you write..... ..".it would not quit when I turned off the key.. new ignition switch..new 12 volt conversion with in line resistor"..... .guess what??? you didn't wire yer 12-volt conversion correctly.

The common 3-wire Delco 10-SI needs a "switched excite" thru an "idiot-lite" from yer ignition switch to yer P-1 terminal. Or else yer engine won't ever stop. Isn't that amazing??? yer P-2 terminal is short-wired (3") to yer BIG alternator STUD output..... ....Dell, a 12-volt advocate for the right reason, who knows 8-ways to convert to 12-volts and they all work

I think I have a 3 wire switch somewhere if that would be better.

I wired it like it shows in the diagram I got from this site..heres what I have..2 wire switch..one wire to the hot terminal block and one to the stock resistor..then to the new in line resistor and to the coil. Ammeter..one to solenoid and one to hot terminal block. Alternaor..red on batt post on alt to hot terminal block..#1 on alt to solenoid..#2 toterminal block. Its probably screwed up but Im up a tree.

Ricko..... ..here is what I wrote:..... ."The common 3-wire Delco 10-SI needs a "switched excite" thru an "idiot-lite" from yer ignition switch to yer P-1 terminal. Or else yer engine won't ever stop. Isn't that amazing??? yer P-2 terminal is short-wired (3") to yer BIG alternator STUD output"..... ...and heres what you wrote..... .."#1 on alt to solenoid..... ."#2 toterminal block"

DO IT LIKE I TELL YOU..... ..#1 to your IGNITION SWITCH "ON" terminal Do you know which is your ignition switch "ON" terminal????..... .you wrote..... ."2 wire switch..one wire to the hot terminal block and one to the stock resistor" ..... ...guess which is yer ignition "ON" terminal???..... ...hint: it AIN'T the hot terminal

Connect yer #2 terminal with short wire to yer alternator BIG STUD output. UNDERSTAND???

Connect yer BIG STUD alternator OUTPUT to yer terminal block battery input (bottom of a "T" shaped insulator, top of the "T" is crossed with the "infamous ballast resistor, necessary for the squarecan ignition coil)..... ...you write..... ."Alternaor..red on batt post on alt to hot terminal block"..... ..which sounds right..... ...respectfully, Dell

Did you use a Tisco head gasket? A kit from Tru-Power? If so, you should know the Tisco head gaskets are pretty tough to torque down - sometimes taking as many as 5 re-torquing sessions.

Victor was the NOS head gaskets, and were great. Unfortunately, finding one is very tough. Fel-Pro makes a very nice head gasket, and you can get a soft one from NAPA that is pretty good. Takes the torque the first time (but do it at least twice anyway).

Torque it again...

Good luck,
Dan

I think it was Tisco..not sure its silver metallically looking but somewhat soft and flexible...got it with the kit from this site.Should I put more torque on em or just check em all again?

Just retorque again after running it awhile and letting it cool down. May take a few cycles of this.

HTH,
Dan
