Got my 49 8n all rebuilt and engine painted and finally rigged up a small gas tank to run her on til I get the hood painted....turned on the key and choked her and she started right up...smoked quite a bit from all the oil I dumped down the sparkie holes while I was dry running it to check the oil pressure but....it would not quit when I turned off the key.. new ignition switch..new 12 volt conversion with in line resistor..12 volt coil..new cap, rotor and points and condensor...had to shut off the gas to make her die..shes been sleepin so long she got all excited and would not give up. Any guesses as to what the problem is?

I'm with Bob.. you need some ignition isolation.

Common problem if you don't have a diode or light bulb in the excite wire going from the #1 terminal to the ignition switch. What happens is the alternator back feeds the coil so when you turn off the switch it still has power so you have no shut off. Bobs picture shows it well and how it should be

I hope you disconnected the power after she quit, the ignition is still on. Dead battery, burned points, melted coil etc.....

New 12 Volt Conversion with resistor!!! Check to see if you have a diode in the exciting circuit of the alternator. If not, the alternator will feed back into the ignition circuit and keep it running. Been there--done that. One way to test is to unplug the alternator and see if the engine will shut off when the key is off.

You need a diode, idiot lamp or resistor... in reply to Pappy, 11-04-2007 20:44:40
You need a diode, "idiot lamp" or resistor in the lead to the alternator's #1 "switched Excite" terminal.

Howdy: Could be the switch gave up the ghost; or forgot how to work. Mine switched over during a run and off was on and on was off. Yikes. New switch and all was in order. Might put a meter on it and see if it's still letting power through with it off and on. Good luck

I checked one of the sparkie wires and it sparks with the switch on but not when its off...feels and looks like a pretty jicky switch..
