I have been going over my recently purchased 8N and have a few questions if I may
1/ Should I add a regular 50/50 mixture of regular auto antifreeze to bring the water level back to the top of the radiator core?
2/ I can not get the small door over the air intake open. There is a wing not latch but no position allows me to pry the door open? Is there a trick to this?
3/ I am getting a little oil drip from 2 spots on the bottom of the tractor along the lower housing under the engine. It looks like there are 2 small holes with cotter pins installed from inside with the 2 ears bent over on the outside. Does this make sense what I am saying? The seepage seems to be coming ut of these small holes. THANKS TED

On #1, you need to check the strength of what's in there first. To be on the safe side I'd drain the radiator and block and start fresh with antifreeze and distilled water. #2, I don't know
#3, I think that's normal

Ted..... ...(1)yes, use 50/50 anti-freeze
(2)ain't no real reason to open the airbreather trapdoor except curiosity or fulla trash. They're not the "strongest" piece of sheetmetal so iff'n you just gotta open it, pry away. (3)ah yes, Ford hy-tech cotterkey drip-hole scheme. Since tractors frequently work in dusty ground conditions, the tranny drip-holes would CLOGG-UPP iff'n didn't have them jingle-jangle cotterkeys to keep the greesy-dust cleared away. Tricky, eh?

As to the drips, usually caused by OVERFILLED hydro-tranny oil leaking past wornout tranny input shaft seal. While they could be caused by a worn and leaky rear crankshaft seal, Hakeem's Razor sez its the tranny seal.

tip: pull the bottom 6-o'clock bolt of yer 6" tranny dipstick plate and let enny overfill dribble down the side of yer tranny overnite. Now MARK yer new "official" tranny level on yer dipsick. Simple, eh?..... ...Dell

Welcome to the fun of owning an N!

Not that it matters w/ you questions this time, but N's come in a lot of 'flavors'. When you ask a question, make sure you identify it as "8N side/front distributor 6/12v" so that everyone knows what you are talking about.

Cleaning & flushing the cooling system never hurts, but if you do not have time for that, then a 50/50 fix only covering the core is appropriate. Distilled water will save you from calcium buildup in the water jacket.

The air intake door in the hood has two little metal ears on the top; carefully pry it up from the bottom.

The holes w/ the cotter keys are drain holes for leaky transmission & rear engine seals. The cotter pins keep dirt from clogging the holes. Unless the fluid loss is showing up on the dipstick, no "fix" is needed..... IMHO!

Cotter pins are supposed to be there. They allow oil or trans fluid to drain out of the bell housed and hopefully stay off of you clutch disk.
