A few weeks ago I was down in the creek moving some logs and brush.

A couple of times I went into the water a little too deep.

I have a leaky axle seal. I strongly suspect water got into the axle.

I haven't driven the tractor since then. but there mite be water in the pump.

Tonight is supposed to get down in the mid 20's.

I'm worried about water freezing and busting something.

I can go start it up but it would have to be driven to get the fluid warm.

It sits outside (under a tarp if rain expected) so it is unheated.

I could go get a heat lamp but I don't know if that will help.

Ok, the local news just said 30 degrees for tonight but that is for Chattanooga

and I am 25 miles north of Chattanooga in Dunlap TN.

It gets just a bit colder here so I can figure mid to upper 20's.

But I'm still worried about it. I planned on flushing out the system

anyway but time just got away from me.

What should I do at this point. 8pm and 43 degrees. It's cold outside.

Thanks.

Another option that seems to be working:

Go out and start it every hour or so and let it run for 20 minutes.

The muffler runs under the transmission and rear end

and the heat warms it up and the pump helps circulate the fluid.

I raise the lift up and down to move the fluid around.

Drove it around in circles a couple of times for good measure.

Today I will be changing the fluid. Do a quick rinse and refill.

I'll go get a bucket of fluid and 5 gallons of kerosene.

If only changing that leaky axle seal were that easy.

Don't know how y'all above the Mason Dixon line handle this cold.

I was afraid of that answer. but I know it would be best.

Here are the possibilities I came up with. (in no particular order)

1. Drain it (like you said)

2. cover it up good and put a heat lamp under the rear end.

3. do nothing and hope for the best (yeah, I got fluff for brains)

4. Drain only the rear plug where the pump is.

5. put a heat lamp under it and don't tarp it down.

6. put a heat lamp under and put sheets of plywood around it to block the wind.

Tarps ain't gonna be much in the way of insulation.

But they will block the wind. And I will have to go buy one quick.

I would also have to buy a heat lamp.

Draining that much oil won't be no picnic under the best of conditions.

Doing it tonight after having pneumonia last week won't help me any.

So I'm asking, what about the heat lamp and tarp options.

Thanks.

Pull all three drain plugs? Water will be on the bottom. Let it drain over night and fill wih fresh oil tomorrow.
