My 8N "Mater" has gone through coils since I have owned. It has a 12 volt negative ground system, front mount distributor with a ceramic block type resitor between the ignigtion switch and coil. No two coils have seemed to fail in a simular manner. One would not work while hot, the second one quite while shredding and never worked again and the last one failed while the tractor was warming up. I have had both 12 and 6 volt coils at one time or the other and the tractor seems to run the same. Mater always starts on the first crank and runs without a sputter until the coil gives out. I have had a coil last fifty hours and a couple last less than ten hours. I keep a spares handy but I would like to know what's driving this problem.

OK I'll use the info from you guys and see what I can figure out, Thanks for sending me in the right direction. I got Mater back at my city place and plan on resolving some of the issues that came up during what was probally was the hardest summer Mater had in a while. Need to get my charging system working, ignition issues fixed, slack out of the steering and do some trouble shooting on the hydraulics. In spite of all mentioned, we got the work done and in good spirits. Thanks Fellas.

Yep.. for instance.. if you don't have the oem ballast resistor inthere.. then your 'ceramic' resistor may not be limiting current enough.

if you have a vom.. throw it in series withthe coil and set to amp reading.. you need to adjust resistance so current in circuit is as bob said .. 3-4a

What's causing the problem is an incorrectly installed 12v conversion. Bob has the answer; your coil is getting too much current. The link below by Chris Britton will give you all the info you need to fix it.

Do you have the means to accurately measure the primary ignition current with the ignition switch "ON", engine stopped?

You are looking for about 3 Amps, to NOT over 4 Amps.

If the current is too high, you need more resistance in the primary circuit.
