Just when you think life is out to get ya, something else good happens...

My wife called to tell me George a guy that lives about a mile behind us came by and dropped off a MF sickle bar. I had helped him round up some cows that had made their way onto my place not long ago and I inquired about the sickle that was buried in the weeds. He just basicly ignored my interest at the time or so I thought. Well he dug it out and came by the house right after I left for work tonight (then stayed for some coffee). George is a talker and he stayed until just after midnight...

So I am now the owner of a MF sickle bar... my wife says the pitman arm is rotted away and George said it needs a drive shaft (only half of it is there). My wife knowing me looked for a ID plate but didn't find one... She says the bar is 6 or 7 foot long and the lift pins are facing to the inside. She also noted that it has one broken guard, all the others are in good shape. Other than that I don't know much about it...

This may keep me from transporting the Ford 501 that I and my brother in law share and keep mostly at my FIL's.

I am just finding a ton of nice folks lately...

James

Bob, I have a Ford 501 that lists the 9N on one of the tags showing the top link length required, mine was built in the late 60's I think.
The Massey that I just got is not as heavy as the 501 and is easier to hook up. So I will probably keep it at home if I get it working.

I have seen sickle bars in ads for the 9N but don't know anything about them specificly...

James

Since this was posted in the Ford 9N, 2N & 8N Discussion Board Ill ask a question as it relates to the 9N.

Does anyone know if a Sickle bar attachment for the 9N was ever made?

If so what would the average price of a good working model be ?

and if anyone knows of one for sale in the California or northern Nevada , Southern Oregon area please pass on any information my way.

thanks all in advance.

I glanced at it briefly today, I can not find a model number but the blades look good, it does have one guard broken. It definately needs a pitman and George says he doesn't have the drive shaft.
It is definately not a project for right now, (no money) but later on it will give me something to tinker with and see what happens. I am just happy that he thought of me instead of the scrap yard. By what I see it will take some time to clean it up and I can decide if the price is worth putting it back in service.

James, Maybe the neighbor has the PTO shaft laying in the shed. That used to happen all the
time-I'd ask him. A pitman stick can be bought
or made and guards are avail at most any farm
store. It is probably a model 32 or 42 if it is
a 3 pt hitch. Do you have a picture? I can match
to the op or parts book. Chuck

Hate to rain on your parade, but being left out in the weather is not kind to these mowers. Check first, but you may find the cost to repair may excede value by a large amount. BTDT.
