I am in China for a couple weeks. As I sit in traffic jams, I am seeing 3 wheel trucks with about a ton of stuff on them. They have a chain, or maybe a belt drive, from the one cylinder engine to the rear axle. Does anyone know if they have a transmission to go to faster speed and go in reverse? Is the tranny on the rear axle and how do they get reverse? They remind me of old Deere 2 cylinders but the pop is even more interrupted. They must only turn about 150rpm when they idle. They are real workhorses though!!

The most common of these are adapted from motorcycles. Take a look at the link below for more examples:

Yep ! A whole bunch of them over there in that part of the world! Called Tuk-Tuk trucks in Thailand. Really neat things & real workhorses! & yep, some of them do sound like Johnny Poppers! There are different transmission/rear axel arrangements. Some are even powered from the front wheel. In Asia, even the small motorcycles often carry tons of stuffs & folks! Would definitely not be legal here in amerika, but over there it is a case of: "if it fits, we can haul it,or strap it on top". I personally have many pix of improbable loads being hauled on vehicles in the PI that would curdle the blood of a safety freak! As most of us Know, a Jeepney will not depart until it is Impossible to fit anyone else into the vehicle/on top of the vehicle, or hanging off the back! (Unless one pays extra for a "special trip") I have seen WHOLE families (4 or more folks with a baby!) with livestock cruising down the road on a small motorbike that we would use for Off-road dirt biking! Got a bunch of pix of this. But, one must realize that in those lands, private vehicle ownership is rare, comparitively. Hence the hauling of much stuffs on PUBLIC UTILITY VEHICLES! Most Jeepneys & some Busses have racks on top to haul stuffs. Like extra spare tyres/fuel/livestock/etcetcetc. Great places & much fun! Enjoy ur vacation in China, or whatever caused u to be there! I will (hopefully) return to the PI before Christmas & am looking 4ward to it intensely!! CC, who is homesick 4 my palm trees!!

Rayiowa,

Sounds like Chinese knock-offs of English Scammel Scarabs:

Could be a knock-off,, I don't know. Many of them in China do not have luxuries I see in your pic, such as a windshield or a cab. Certainly no lights. Certainly not the extra axle in the back. Just three wheels could easily haul that load down a rutted dirt road with motorcycles and bicycles buzzzing around it like flies on a carcass. Single cylinder, open water tank to cool it. The Chinese would rival any midwestern farmer for ingenuity in "just get the job done". No need for safety nor aesthetics!!
