I just wired up my headlights on 49 6v 8n and they are extremely dim. (VERY YELLOW) I thought they might be 12 lamps since no markings so I went and bought new 6v from TSC. No change. Rewired with separate ground wire going back to positive lead on battery thinking bad connections between sheet metal parts but still no change. Reading 6.5 volts from light side of switch to ground. I'm stumped.

Tp, I rewired my 860 last year. and ran an independent ground to each head light. You wouldn't beleive the difference. It's a little extra work and wire, with a tight fit going into the headlight with two wires. But It's like the difference between a candle and daylight. I intend to rewire the lights on my other 3 fords the same way. John

Could be a bad ground.

Are the lamps any brighter with the tractor running?

You should be seeing close to 7.4 Volts at the lamps with the tractor running and the generator charging.

TP;
It may be that, the toggle light switch is not rated at enough amps. Mine were slightly dim, when I first wired them. I went to the local auto parts, and bought a toggle switch with 50 amp capacity, and my lights are nice and bright now. Also use at least 10 gage NEW wire for your lights, as any rust inside the wire, will affect the lights.

Try wireing the bulb right up at the battery.. take it out of the shell and use short jumper wires.. see what you get.

keep in mind that most 6v tractor bulbs are a whopping 30-35 watts... Many 12v tractor bulbs are 50-55w.. etc.

As another poster said. may be insufficent wireing or switch.. make sure your switch is rated to handle at least 12a. if it is a 10a switch.. you are exceeding it's contact rating by using (2) 35 w lamps..

What is the voltage at the bulb?
Are the bulbs wired in series or parallel?

What gauge wire did you use?

What is the voltage across the switch? (Between the two terminals)

I assume voltage at the battery is 6.5V or close?
