Well folks -- after all the help rating the various 8Ns I presented during my tractor search, ol fickle fate stepped in and...voila -- looks like my first tractor will be a Fergie.

Came across her during my search and worked out a deal last night.
1951 TEA 20 Serial 180054.

To be delivered Saturday, complete with 12 volt conversion, blade on the back, pretty good tin, clattery motor, so-so tires and disabled shift start.

I figure I'll still pop over from the HF side as there's lots of good all round tractor sense here and the mysteries of spark, fuel, and hydraulics are a universal language anyway.

Appreciate all the help. Here's a few pics.

Great looking tractor!

If the "shift start" you mention "not working" is the interlock that only lets the starter work if the transmission is in neutral, I'd vote for making that repair the first thing you do. I mean, what fun is a shiny new tractor if all it does is run over you?

Thanks Marty -- holy smoke, never considered the battery post location. You're right, it's both too close and not secured properly.

Someone on the HF side also noted that the bolts on the front axle should not be adjacent but rather spaced by at least a hole so they don't shear.
Man, two serious issues and I haven't even hit the dirt yet! third party image

Good looking fergie. I came close to buying one also. It was a TO 20 and a lot rougher than yours, price at the auction got to high for me. It looks like someone took a lot of time to paint yours up nice. Is it the pictures or is the battery and wire sitting that close to the gas tank, might want to see if it will turn around with the posts away from tank, and make sure it is tied down good. I would hate to see a pretty tractor go booooom. I am sure you will have a lot of fun and get a lot of seat time out of that one.
Marty

Good luck, I looked at T30 and T35 but ended up with a Jubillee
