Finally, it started, it runs, but alas I have coolant through the head studs, not head bolts. Instead of removing the head, then taking out the studs, sealing them and then replacing the head, is it a better plan to take out the studs, one at a time, without taking off the head and replacing with a new head bolt????

The safe method would be to pull them and pucky up a bolt and pop it in.. I think Bob gave some good info onthe pucky.

If you aren't getting coolant in the oil, I think Zanes idea of letting it run, and perhaps throwing in a builders cube brobably won't hurt, again.. if no coolant is getting into the oil. Remember to retorque it once it is warm... might just go away.. etc..

If you will simply run the tractor for a while I bet the leaking around the nuts will stop on it's own. There probably is just enough material floating around with the coolant to bridge the small leaks.

It is worth a try. Why not. However I am one of those guys (everyone has an opinion) that won't mix antisieze with the thread sealer for inside the block bolt threads.

The permatex site gives the low down (their propaganda) on their sealant products and ratings. I got paranoid and used the expensive stuff.

Will never-seize seal the threads? I was going to use a liquid teflon seal or perma-tex.

The liquid teflon seal is PERFECT for the job.

One other question.....my parts book says the head bolt should be 2-3/8" long, what is the maximum length? I would think at least 2-1/2" would be fine.

There's certainl NO reason you can't do that, so long as you can get the studs to come out!

I figured on using vice-grips or small pipe wrench. If I can't get them all out I will have to resort to the PITA method. Thanks for your comment.
