I finished picking our corn yesterday, and pulled the tractor out of the field onto the driveway to unhitch. I SHOULD have shut down (dumb mistake no. 1), and SHOULD NOT have reached into the husking bed to brush out a couple of hung up ears (dumb mistake no. 2).

Just a reminder (coming from an avowed 'safety first' guy) that you have to be safe EVERY TIME, no exceptions.

I have a vivid reminder of that now, and thank the Lord it wasn't worse.

One last photo of the husking bed. You can clearly see where my hand was, and how much of a miracle it is that I still have it (not much space in there).

Holy buckets, Ed! It easily could have been a lot worse, and thank God that it wasn"t. Somebody was looking out for you. Gives me the shivers just thinking about it.

Heal up quickly!

Ed,

So glad you were not hurt any worse. Classify this as a "life learning experience" that you will probably never forget.

So glad it wasn't worse! These things ARE dangerous.A friend got off his Ford Major to move something that was going to be in the way for his next pass, when he was directly behind the running bush hog he noticed a boot string was untied. He knelt to one knee to tie it,his back foot went under the bush hog with expected results. The slightest distraction can, well we've all had our near misses.Hope you have a quick and comfortable recovery, and thanks for posting this reminder to us all about how these machines treat us whenever they get the chance.

Just got back from the doc - no broken bones, and we're to continue what we've been doing (rest, ice, compression and elevation). Got a tetenus booster and an antibiotic prescription. They said it will take 1+ weeks for the swelling to go down.

The more I thionk about it, the more thankful I am to God for His mercy - by all rights, I should have lost my hand...

Too late now .I always shut off the pto when I get off the tractor.A baler can trip when your hand is in the knotter and drive a needle thru your hand.A farmer I worked for lost a finger tip messing with a knotter.

First off I would have to say whats wrong with typeing left handed. I do it all the time but I'm left handed and in my right mind. Yep you goofed big time but think of it this way you will NEVER do it again unless you didn't learn that is. Yep a machine doesn't care a bit if its your hand or any thing else. But thats not the good way to learn a lession

You are another very lucky person to not have lost your hand in a corn picker. My first memory of a farm injury was a man who lost is arm up to about 3 inches from his elbow. I was not old enough to drive a tractor yet.
20 odd years ago, a person working for me at GM got his hand into the corn picker husking rolls while in the field across the road from my house. His hand looked about like yours. He was so embarrased. He had been 30 years in industry with nothing more than minor lacerations.
We farmed until I left home in 1966. I certainly did some stupid things but was fortunate to never get tangled in a machine. My father taught me to respect moving things.
I spent 15 years, of my 38 years in the automobile industry, around machinery. I still have all of my appendages. We had what we called our 11th finger. It was a piece of plastic that was often mistaken for an ink pen, even with a pen pocket clip. Printed on it was, "This is my eleventh finger; it saves my other 10". I still have one around here somewhere.
Count your blessings and get well. I hope you have a full recovery.

Thats nothing compared to what my wife does when I reach for something cooking before shes ready to serve it !

Like Russ said , Glad your OK and thanks for the reminder . I have had some close calls in my life and have seen some horror pictures like yours to keep me reminded.

Even if I am in a hurry , I wait until the bush hog quits spinning before I even get off the tractor , Thanks to people hammering in the idea to be safe .

Sorry for the confusion - I took the photo with my laptop's built-in camera, which mirrored the image. It was indeed my right hand that almost got 'shucked.'

There's part of the problem, Ed. You say "typing this with my left hand." That's your left hand that got banged up. Or was that, "My OTHER left hand?"

Seriously now, thanks for admitting your mistakes as a vivid reminder to all of just how quickly injuries can happen.

Russ
