I have two questions. If I change head bolts without removing the head, should I drain some of the coolant first. Second, will I be able to use a head bolt that is 2-1/2" long?

Thanks a lot. Now if I am lucky enough to get the studs out.

Now THAT is a challenging prospect :-) I had to get real good at drilling 12 of them out of my 9N block. If you want some real world advice - don't replace those studs unless you absolutely HAVE to.

Good luck,
Dan

These shouldn't be a problem because I just had them out when I rebuilt the engine. The problem is that I failed to put a sealant on the threads and the coolant is leaking on the studs.

AINag,If its just leaking around the stud threads, and you've had them out .Why don't you drain the block, take them back out one at a time.Put some liquid teflon sealer on them and put the studs back in and retorque the nuts.Fill the radiator back up after running it 30 minutes to a hour. Then retorque them all.The studs will hold better than bolts will.

Why would the studs stay tighter than head bolts? They have the same threads into the block and the cap screws are tightened with more torque.

Studs avoid the bolts wearing and trying to tear the threads out of the cast iron block everytime the head is tightened.

You doubt studs are BETTER? Ever wonder why performance engine builders replace pretty much ALL critical bolts in the engine with STUDS?
