I have read some old posts where Bruce(VA)said after draining all the old oil out to remove both inspection plates on the right and left side to remove sludge around the Hyd pump.My question is,the left inspection plate has the lever to engage the PTO,what do I need to do to take that off?I'm doing all of this in a 32degree shop as I just bought this tractor and wanted it to go to bed with fresh oil in the transmission. Thanks for your thoughts

Good idea dropping the pump. You can get all the sludge out with the pump out of the way. With the PTO shaft out you might find some sludge in the diffy. I did and scrapped all that out and rinsed it out with deisel...Waste of 5 gallons of fluid if you dont clean it right....

You are not going to serve any purpose trying to clean the sump threw the inspection holes, if you are not going for the kill and drop the pump just drain threw the drain plugs and leave the sleeping dog B till you have a need to drop the pump.

Hobo, that is what I ended up doing, like you said.I will need to drop the pump as it is not working. This old gal has not had much care.So getting new trans oil is quite a treat for her.

Remove the bolts for the inspection cover. The lever comes off with the plate

On the 8n ( 9n and 2n as well ).. the rear end, transmission, and hyds all share a common oil sump cavity.

A REAL GOOD cleaning would involve dropping the belly pump and going in with a scraper and a hand pump sprayer of mineral spirits or kerosene and removing as much sludge as possible.

Removing either inspection port isn't much more involved than backing the bolts out holding the plates on...

takes about 5g of oil to fill er back up..use UTF or yellow metal safe gear oil.. your choice.. if in real cold areas and you have no leaks.. UTF will give you faster initial hyds.. vs slower hyds with gear oil till things get warmed up..e tc..... and there are 3 drains.. 2 large ones.. one under the trans , and one under the hyd pump.. then a pipe plug under the diffy..

You also might consider getting an owners manual / service manual. The parts section of this website carries them.
