Just starting a rebuild / restoration on a 51 8n. Pedal would go almost 4 inches before any pressure could be felt on the clutch.I split it and was prepared to replace clutch, pressure plate, and throwout and pilot bearing. Clutch was practically new. Will the throwout bearing retainer wear to the point that very little amount of travel is left in pedal? What about using shims behind the throwout bearing? Any ideas?

I may need to go to bed..

I cant even find this topic on the old board.

It has really ticked me off.

One good turn gits all the covers.

Riders in the Sky, just played some awesomly funny stull on the Grand Ole Opery.

it is adjusted all the way out

Mine seems to be adjusted all the way in!!

Ok guys,no shear on the fork / shaft or on the pedal / shaft. I have replaced the throwout bearing retainer, old looked great by comparison. I have gone over and over all of the contact points all look good to me.New clutch bolts do not bottom out on flywheel. All of the linkages are good and straight. Anybody have a measurement of the thickness of the top of the forks?

We can buy a new throw out bearing retainer fairly reasonabley priced, I may have to give you that info in the AM (I didn't see it right off on this site).

My money is with Hobo, on the sheered pin, there are a couple, or 3.

It could also be the adjustment like the others said, the bolt thru the yoke.

its possible the pin that retains the clutch fork to the clutch cross shaft has sheered. Check crank shaft end play. Make sure clutch cover bolts do not bottom out b-4 they tighten the cover 2 flywheel.

Will the throwout bearing retainer wear to the point that very little amount of travel is left in pedal

Probably not

What about using shims behind the throwout bearing? Any ideas

Not a good idea at this time. Its a mechanical operation look over all possibilities, every connection needs inspection, my money at this time is clutch fork to the cross shaft.

Maybe i misunderstood, but clutch free play was over 4 inches with foot rest in place. I did not get any pressure on pedal until about 1 inch above floorboard. I have replaced clutches in the past but this one has me stumped

Does your N have the adjustment on the turnbuckle next to the padal? Try that first.

Way too much, the foot rest must be in place to get the proper measurement on the 8N, seen it happen before.
