I have a Sears tach/dwell meter with two leads, yellow and black. Can someone tell me where do the leads attach to measure RPM. Thanks in advance.

You could go with electronic ignition and a 12 volt upgrade, with a 12 volt round coil mounted on the left side of the engine. Then hooking up a dwell tach would be really easy. All for under five hundred dollars! (Maybe, I'm not really sure, I hid the receipts so the wife didn't see them, and forgot where I put them.)

Jerry.

If you are looking for a simple answer try this One lead connects to ground and the other to secondary side of the coil. Unfortunately, for the front mont distributor it will be inside the distributor body. If yo feel creative go to FLAPS and pick up a distributor lead for an older Ford car/truck. It is the type with a built in grommet in the line. Connect that up to the brass screw inside the distributor. Connect the other end to the tach/dwell lead.

Better make that "the breaker points side of the coil PRIMARY"!

The secondary will be putting out 10,000 to 15,000 Volts, and you don't want to mess with that! (UNLESS you've got an inductive pickup setup that clamps AROUND the insulation on a plug wire.)

Take the Sears one back. Click on the link below. This one is easy to hook up. No drilling. Also keeps track of run hours.

Thanks for all the input. I can't take the Sears unit back but I do like DavidO's suggestion. Thanks to all.

Forgot to add.. if you are lucky and your meter is setup for inductive coupling.. you may be able to get tach function.. anyway..

Ever notice that the outging side of the primary, and the secondary coil connections on a front mount are unaccessable... ie.. the only accessabbly connection on a front mount is the incoming coil primary... there's part of your problem.. etc..
