My 8n just won't start when the temp is below about 20-25 degrees F. It has a 12V system with good cranking power. It gets plenty of gas, sediment bowl is clean. I have rebuilt the carb, checked electrical, including timing. I have a nice blue hot spark. I have cleaned and gapped relatively new plugs. I run the carb dry when I shut down. I have tried warming the carb, I have read the archives and recent posts. When it is warm, it starts easily. WHen it is cold, it floods, the carb drips and it will not start. Woe is me... any more suggestions? I know this has been beat to death on the board, but I am desperate.. THanks, in advance.

If your gas has been in for some time, drain it and put in fresh winter blend gas. More volitile in cold weather. Make sure plugs are clean and dry before trying with new gas.

I am surely the odd man out, but I never run my
carburator dry. I do shut the fuel off to the carb. There will be a residue left in the carb
after it has run dry. It will build up into a
varnish eventually and that will cause problems.
I have a 49 8n & a 40 9n. I have started them this
year down to a low of zero degrees. 6 volt systems. Mayby I am just lucky? Good Luck! ED

Lot of good advice here but there is one other thing you may want to check. What is your compression at these temperatures? Low comp. can cause a lot of probems.

If you can, try putting a drop light by the carburetor to keep it, and its gasoline, warmer then the -20 degrees.

My plugs were relatively new, too. Only thing that got my tractor running was replacing them with new plugs. Go figure.

I had the same situation with my 6 volt 8N. I found that what I was doing wrong was over-choking and flooding the engine right off the bat. Try turning it over with the choke open and then very gradually closing the choke until it fires. Once its running, adjust the choke as needed till it warms up. Also be sure the PTO is disenged. Try a magnetic block heater on the oil pan as well. Since I started this procedure I have had no trouble starting down to 18 below zero. Good luck-keep warm.

For me the best choking technique seems to be the pop it in and out real quick while cranking. Doesn't take much choke at all, maybe 1/2 a sec with the choke closed. You might want to pull your plugs and burn off any fouling with a propane torch or replace.

Have the same problem starting henry in n.h. -20 w/heavy oil.The radiator lower hose heater was not making it either, but kept it on as a blanket.I took a blast heater, kero type.Tucked it under a BIG tarp to cover tractor w/loader and back blade.Did this on the non-carb side w/heater blowing at oil pan. Also used a 6 volt starter/charger,8n thought it summer and started.I had not run it since thanksgiving,I tried hot plugs, starting fluid, none worked till I warmed the seat. Good Luck

gotta be careful with the choke! I am in ND with an original '48 8N (6V, etc), motor is tired but still has good compression. mine will start down to -30 F with good results. I have a hose heater, but even without it, make sure your battery is good, open throttle half or better, pull choke, crank for few revolutions till fires, push in choke. When it catches to run, play with the choke until she will run on her own. Might want to put new plugs in if they have been soaked in rich mixture too long.
good luck.

I had been experiencing the same problem every time I went to plow the drive and was getting really frustrated. I was wondering if this 9N was the right tractor for our midwest winters. I fortunatly read on the board about being sure the Pto is disengaged, Presto no more problem. The old girl and I are friends again.
