Question on 8N carburetor

I just rebuilt the carb. on my 1952 8N tractor, and set the float 1/4" from gasket as they said. Then I thought I would check it, so I used a funnel and hose and poured gas in it, and it floods out the air inlet. Seems to me like the float isn't working and shutting off the gas. I have tried adusting the float lower, but then gas won't flow in. Any ideas?

All good replys guys, thanks! I just tried a little experiment. The float floated in water really good, so I thought it was good, but... I tried letting it hang from the upper part of the carb, and then submerged it in water, sure enough, the float came right up. But then I tried it in a bowl of gas, and it did not come up. I think gas is less dense or lighter then water, so maybe that makes a difference, but I think the float is bad. It seems to be the original float, made out of tin. I am going to buy a new float and try the experiment again...hopefully that will solve the problem.

Most of the time if a float is bad you can shake it and here the gas inside or it. Also you can drop the float in hot/boiling water and watch for bubbles/sinking.

Drop the float into a container of gas. If it floats sideways it has gas in it and needs to be replaced.

Could be a bad float that has a hole in it and fills with gas. Or if you put in a new seat you may not have it tight enough or the needle isn't seating as it should. If the new needle has a rubber tip you some times need to seat if first to get it to work right. Open it back up and remove the flaot. Put the needle in the seat and tap it a couple times with a screw driver handle etc. Then reset to the 1/4 inch it should be and see if those things help

I assume you have a bouyant float. The part that contacts the needle should be smooth. If not, fill with solder and file down till flat again.I think you have(foreign matter)in between the needle and seat.Do not deviate from what the specified setting of the float should be.I also assume you have a fiber washer between the seat and casting. Check to make sure the float is not touching the outside of the bowl and sticking
