Hey guys, Despite my smart arse reply earlier today to a post from GB in MT, I followed his process for the “quickie way” to clean up sticky valves this afternoon after taking a compression test a few days ago that told me the rings were OK, but the valves were an “issue”. Here is the difference in the compression test before and after. You can’t imagine the difference in power!

Cyl Before After
1 85 85
2 50 80
3 78 90
4 70 85

It only took about 2-3 hours (5 Bud Lites), a set of manifold gaskets and 1 can of PB Blaster. Total cost: $11.95, results: priceless.

All you have accomplished is free up some deposits around the valve face/seat you still have leak"n valves. The same could B done just by pouring top engine cleaner rite in the spark plug hole. rotate the engine a few cycles and add a little more. Sit back and wait repeat as you see fit. You can also induce the cleaner threw the intake. Their are some real good cleaners out their,,, GM top engine cleaner is the best,,, I think they now have it in a aerosol,,, chrysler has it in a rattle can. I have a set up made by BG to preform a top engine clean"n,,,, in almost all cases it helps performance issues. For the most part If I run into a sick"n valve disassemble is the only answer to the problem BUT I do try other techniques fer I tear into it. If the problem is from rust cuzz the engine has set for a while no clean"n I have ever done will resolve the issue,,, in the end the valve will need to come out. Same applies for a purt neer new valve job,,, clearance is to tight no oil/cleaning is gonna free it up.

I guess I need to learn to git a good chuck"el out of these DIY repairs and forgit it. If one has the time,,, will"n to kill a few beers,,, likes that fuzzy feel"n he gits from hiz Fantastic EZ to use Scrubbing Bubbles spray wipe and go treatments then Gofer"it. Its time well spent with the family (tractor) could B worst you could ignore it. It hard to say its a waist of time but I think you will have short term benefits other than may-B in the process one mite learn some"n and mite even feel more comfortable when it comes time to tackle a valve job.

OK what have I got to add to this "Fantastic EZ to use Scrubbing Bubbles spray wipe and go treatment" It also will git spots out of the carpet,,, Wipes out tough grease and grime,,, leaves a nice fresh sent,,, We do the hard werk so you don"t havta"

Seriously tho enny piston driven engine will benefit from a upper intake clean"n. Thats why I spent the big bucks for a tool to do the job,,, course I like to make a few bucks 2,, He he.

Could you remind us what the method was?
Thanks,

Here is a copy of GB's valve clean up process:

Remove from engine:
1. Exhaust pipe
2. carb.
3. Manifold
4. spark plugs
5. side inspect. plates for valves Tools you'll need:
1. thin, flat blade, slot screwdriver(long handle)
2. fairly long, phillips screwdriver (med. shank)
3. can of PB Blaster, or equivalent spray (with tube)
4. small mouth, needle nose pliers, or vise grips
5. small flashlight with strong light Things to do(step by step.)
1. spray the valve stems with PB, or rust reducer lube. Also spray the valve heads through the s-plug holes (you can see the v-heads through them, thus the flashlight. Just give them a good spray, not a hole bunch. Let the spray set about 15-20 min. 2. Go lft. to right on this, so you won't miss a valve. Put the slot s-driver under the v-stem. While prying down lightly on the handle, keep working the valve up and down, until it works smooth all the way up and down.
While working the valve, periodically spray the area up and down the stem, also through the s-plug hole onto the valve top.
Do this, to every valve, then work in reverse and do them again.
The phillips head is to put into the s-plug hole, so you can help push down on the valve head, in case you should get a stubborn stuck valve. 3. After doing all the valves this way, spray tem down again, and let them set for about 30 min. Go get a cup of coffee, and a small stiff-brushed tooth brush. 4. Take the tooth brush, and scrub the valve springs real good with it. Spray valves again and immediately turn the engine over with the starter, KEY OFF.!!!! Do that about 3 times and you should have it done. 5. Put everything back together and cross your fingers, that the valves are all loosened up. ( I have done this 2x and it really seems to work good.) BUTTON IT UP !!! You are done. Start it up and let it Idle for awhile. Listen closely for any clicking noise. After running the engine for about three days time, the engine should smooth out. Always let the engine warm up, before revving, or driving. That give a border line OLD engine time to get the valves lubed.

Now if you want to keep it loosening up put a QT. of ATF into every 5 GAL. of gas for say the next month or so or next 40 hours of run time. Doing that will help lube all moving parts in the combustion area, valves and rings and you might have an increase from what you have now
