While I was shredding my field for a few hours I noticed my brush hog was staying in the up position..I noticed this because I had cut grass all over my head and shoulders..it did go back down after awhile but still stays up once in a while..I just put new hyd fluid in it and a new overriding clutch...didja know they need grease once in awhile?? The grease zerk was broke off when I bought it and it just looked like a nut so I never greased it...I greased the poo outta the new $59 one and will continue to do so!!

Do you mean that it lifts without your input or that it just stays up after it has been raised and then commanded to drop?

This is a question, not a reply. I don't know how to post a question yet. My 8n lift will only go up to about a true horizontal position thereby not allowing my shredder to be set high enough to properly mow without scalping the grass. Have you got any ideas about this. I have seen photos of 8n's with the lift in the up position and it is way higher than mine. Help please.

Will it go all the way up without weight of shredder on it? Range has been stated as 8 1/2 to 32 1/2 inches as I recall.

It is the Exhaust Control valve that allows the release of fluid/pressure that allows lift arms to drop. Yours is probably sticking or the linkage that operates it is out of adjustment or bent. Remove the right side round cover, the one with hyd dip stick, and look/feel inside for movement of Exhaust Control valve. There are moving parts in there so don't stick hand in while tractor running. If you don't know what or where Exhaust Control valve is, then you need access to a manual. If necassary I could get you started with a pix or two, but you really need a manual for all that is there.

It gets bent one of two ways - either intentionaly because of wear in the linkage system and a shade tree mechanic decides it is easier to bend it to compensate (like mine in the pic below) than take it all apart and replace the worn parts, or because there was water in the hydraulic oil and froze - and the operator forced the handle up.

HTH,
Dan

There is no telling 'how'....the tractor is nearly as old as me! I've heard tell of jake-leg mechanics intentionally bending it to compensate for other problems that might cause the valves not to move as far as they should, but who knows?? Not right solution, however.

Here is a bent one and a straight one & link to adjustment procedure (one man's anyway).

Hey - I recognize that work bench :-)

BTW - my 1948 8N now holds my heavy Ferguson 14-A two bottom plow up off the ground for hours with the engine shut off. I am pretty happy with it.

Dan, are you the same Dan that asked folks with a good running N to measure their carb jets about 6 months ago? If yes, did you ever get satisfied? I have since measured two really sweet runners, if you still interested. Tried YT e-mail to you months ago, but don't ever know if recipient received or not.

Yes - I am the same Dan - I never recieved the emails. I discovered the Tisco rebuild kits thought acurate jet hole sizes were optional :-) Don B. measured a few he had acquired and once I got the correct jets in all spots Delilah fired right up, purred like a kitten, and FINALLY idled down to a SSSSLLLLOOOOWWWW 400 RPMs without stumbling.

Amazing what the correct sized jets will do.

My email is open if you have those measurements - I like to keep stuff like that.

I WOULD BE HAPPY WITH THAT TOO!

Did you straighten that arm?

If you are the "bender', I didn't mean to offend.
I've none a little ningineering in my time, just don't usually recommend it for others.
:)

Nah - I didn't do it. I ended up having to obtain a replacement as the original was egg-shaped in the bore. I did strighten it in my vise just to see how tough it was.
