Anybody know if the the starter for the 9n is the same standard starter used on the early ford cars? The one on my 59 Y block and fordomatic tranny looks exactly the same and its heating up and needs to be replaced or rebuilt but I'm not having much luck on line looking for a replacement..... ...thoughts anyone?

Ron..... ...NOT INTERCHANGEABLE. Yep, all them starter motors look alike. And their guttz are pretty much the same. Its the starter shaft LENGTH that is different. Gitt'chur starter motor rebuilt. Its cheaper and you know it "fitts"..... ...Dell

can I rebuild it myself or do you need special tools. The shop that have taken it to in the past never seems to do a job that last any reasonable amount of time. Need to consult my journel but I believe it was less than a year ago and I had to take it in two after they did it the first time..... ..... ....Its overheating so what does that mean?

Ron , I just put a bushing in my NAA starter. I replaced the rear bushing only as the front one was ok. The rear one almost always needs to be drilled out, I used a dremel tool with a small pointed grinder. Split in two halves and out. Most hardware stores or NAPA will have an assortment to choose from. Put a little white grease when you reinstall. The brushes will pop out when you move the spring out of the way, not very hard.

If it is overheating,it is drawing too much juice caused by loose bushings. Check and replace the brushes if needed when you have it apart. A good shop that repairs starters should have the bushings.

Ron..... ..as far as I know, NO SPECIAL TOOLs.

Iff'n it is overheating, (it should NOT OVERHEAT), why does that make me think yer starter solenoid is NOT dis-engaging the battery. It takes about 5-mins of constant crankin' to overheat a starter motor. Most engines that I know of, generally start in less than 5-seconds. Think about that..... ..Dell

Dell, It doesn't overheat from starting it overheats after Desire (thats her name) has been running for a while and the engine temp is up. Its pulling about 400+ amps after its warmed up but doesn't seem to have the problem on a cold start..... ..... .
