I just got a used John Deere 513 rotary cutter. The telescoping shaft that connects the gear box to my ORC is a little too long (about 4-6"). It looks like it could be cut down to fit, perhaps just by cutting down the plastic outer cover. Any advice?

Thanks in advance.

I cut three inches off the tip of each plastic housing and three inches off the tip of the each slide of the drive shaft. It was really easy with the reciprocating saw and a metal cutting blade. After filing down, cleaning, and greasing everything fit together nicely and fit the tractor. I happily cut some meadow and some brush and am super pleased with the results. The 2N once again proves itself to be a work horse.

Thanks for the hand holding.third party image

More than likely you will need to cut 2" off each end,, slide it apart and make the cuts. Wish you were close I have one cut down for a N and now need it 2 B longer for a nutter tractor.

I wish!! It extends out, but it is too long to fit. I think that the extra length of the ORC is the problem. It should work great if I cut it down as recommended.

On some its a easy thing to do and on others you will need to reweld things. All depends on how its made. On my brush hog to do that I had to grind the square part off, cut the shaft down and weld the part back on. The one I have only has about 6 inches of square that the smaller shft slide into so it had to be done that way to keep it strong enough

I had to cut mine down to work with an over-running clutch as well. First I removed the plastic cover and cut it, then I pulled the telescoping pieces apart, and cut an equal amount from each one, then I filed the ends smooth and put it back together with a little grease on the shafts so that they telescope very easy. I cut mine with a Saws-All using Milwaukee "Torch" metal cutting blades, they cut great. I had to remove 6 inches total from my shaft.

DO NOT get the quick Hitch from Harbor Freight. You won't get the top adapter that you must have for lots of implements. You can order one from them for a reasonable price but you won't have it by next growing/planting or snowfall season. I orderer and paid for one on 11/1/07. Their site shows shipped on 11/2...Never got it so I contacted them several times and they responded promptly each time saying give it more time, then on 11/19 they responded and said they would not even be able to track it till 11/22. Thanksgiving Day yea right....I emailed them again today and asked them to track it and Please re-ship my parts. NEVER will I EVER need anything these junk peddlers have for sale..
