I continue to work to sort out the problems with the R/H brake on my ‘51 side mount. I would like to ask for help from the more experienced folks on a couple of things.
First, short of specialized tools, what does it take to remove the inner oil seal (8N4233A)?
And the worn area on the backing plate (8N2212B) I asked about a few days ago isn’t the only damage. The rim on the dust shield (8N2255) that holds the felt seal is all but gone, the bearing retainer (8N4124B) is heavily worn just outboard of the bearing race, and both spring anchors are worn down. There doesn’t seem to be any interference between these parts, at least not now. This all may be the remains of an old problem and with the cost of the parts I’d rather not replace them all. Any ideas about what may have caused this and if these worn parts can or should be reused? I’d post photos but I do not know how.
I also need to remove the L/H axel and trumpet to replace the lower link support shaft (very loose and leaking badly). So I’m unsure what I will find there.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Ron..... ...fer goodness sakes..... .iff'n yer removing a seal, its BAD to begin with, you don't remove good seals. Remove the seal with what ever tools necessary (chisels, punches, screwdrivers, hammers, seal pullers, prybars.....gitt the idea???) and DESTROY that sucker 'cuz its BAD.

Don't sweat the felt seal, while nice to have, not necessary. Yer belchmobile V-8 don't have drum seals.

You write..... ."the bearing retainer (8N4124B) is heavily worn just outboard of the bearing race" ..... .Replace yer bearing retainer 'cuz that sets yer bearing clearance. Sloppy bearing clearance causes parts wear.

Yer brakeshoe spring anchors wore 'cuz yer brakeshoe anchor got knocked loose by sloppy re-assembly by previous shadetree mechanic.

You really need a brakeshoe spring pliers. Makes brakework so eazy..... .....Dell
