What's the inside of the distributor cap look like? Any indication the rotor contacted a terminal inside it?

Ok your problem may be that you have the wrong distubutor on the tractor. The one in the pictures shows clearly that its made for a 6 cylinder not a 4 cylinder engine. The pictures show 6 cam lobs not the normal 4 that an N series tractor should have. Also I don't see a spring clip do you have one or is it missing also.

What tractor is it on?? Frount or side mount?? If its front mount theres no clip to hold it but it should fit good and tight. If its a side mount it should have a little spring clip to hold it and with out the spring clip it flops around and causes them to brake some times before you even get it started.

From looks of it, don't look like a front mount. Agree?

Judging by the six lobe distributor cam and the seven nipple dist cap and the power wire going through the distributor body -- it is not an 'N tractor front mount. Looks to be for some six cylinder side mount engine.

Did you have the little metal clip on the dist. shaft to keep the roror from flopping around?
