I’ve got a little JD garden tractor (13hp) that has run great, and has started every time, until recently. Within the past 2-3 weeks, it has started fine, and runs perfect until you shut it down. Once you shut it down, it refuses to restart until it has cooled off for at least 45 minutes. I know this is OT – and I know this has been covered before for the N’s, but I can’t remember what this indicates. I've searched the archives, but can't find anything.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

TooTall

OK - So I ran it last night for about 30 minutes and tried to restart it. No good. Have fuel. No spark at all. Not even a weak one.

So - Old Texas Boy mentioned a stator? What is this? could this be my problem? I'm not sure how this thing generates a spark?

Thanks for any help,

TooTall

I have a JD X-485 25 hp garden tractor that I mow with. In Iowa we use a lot of 10% ethanol fuel. When it is hot and you try to restart it, it starts very hard and spits and spudders for a while then smooths out. If I use regular fuel, I have no starting problems at all.

the stators? TH thing that replaces the coil goes south on JOhn Deere yard mowers,, they can bereplaces wiht an electronic device.. Had to do it on one simular to yours some years ago,, never had another issue with it not restarting.

Old - It will seemingly run for as long as there is fuel in the tank. This past weekend, I had it running for a bit over 3 hours untill I shut it down when I was done. Just for grins I tried to restart it, and of course, it wouldn't. It just kept cranking. Didn't even sound like it was trying to start.

All - Thanks for the ideas. I'll check these out and go from there. Of course I welcome any more suggestions too :-)

Thanks,

Chris

Might be the coil and or a vapor lock. Will it keep running for say 2 hours or will it also die if you run it much longer?? As sound say all engines work the same so trouble shooting one works on the others . Fuel spark and compression timed right and any engine should run at any time. Loose one of those no run

Does it have an in line fuel filter? Could the filter be blocked a bit causing a reduction in flow of gas and this might lead to an air bubble in the fuel line caused by heat?

It might not be the fact it is cooling off - just the time factor for the fuel to get through?

Just like with any gas engine, N or otherwise..

When she won't restart.. check for spark a tthe plug.. if you got spark.. check for gas fromt he carb.. If this is a brigs.. it will have a small metal carb bowl.. etc..

If she will 'bang' and start, but then stall on ether.. you have spark.. and a fuel problem..
