My spindle shaft has a lot of black hardened material , grease? looks like from getting hot. Can this be sanded off with no problem or would appreciate other ideas. Sorry us first timers ask stupid questions, but thanks for your help.

The picture isn't too clear but maybe you can get the idea.

Might just be the variety of Iron Oxide that was on the forging or casting before being machined off down to the bright and purty.

Probably some kind of black paint - I see these on axle shafts as well to protect it from rust until used. While it can probably be removed - why would you want to? It is inside the spindle housing and will be covered with grease anyway. I would prefer to have as much protection on that steel shaft as possible to guard against water getting in there and rusting it.

Just my $.02 worth.

Solvent and steel wool or pot scrubbie should clean it up.
