Got the brush hog all hooked up - also ran a chain to it to keep it raised up as I think it is on the limit of what the old gal can keep lifted up - going up to the christmas tree ranch tomorrow with father in law to clear the parking area and some pathways.

Used the superhuman strength that all chefs possess and lifted the deck onto its side - then had at the blades with the neighbours grinder - so should be good to go.

Still dry up here in N CA - which is good for working in but not good for our water supply - father in law says that christmas trees need a good sharp frost to 'set' the needles....so all those people rushing out to get their tree on Thanksgiving afternoon up here are going to have a lot of needles on the carpet by christmas as we really have not had one yet.

We have a family game to see who spots the first car with a tree strapped to the roof heading down the freeway each year!!!!

With out a doubt, some of the most relaxing times Ive ever known were,
running that brushhog.I'ts been a few year ago, about 10yrs I think.I still remember those barn swallows,
diving under the old int 464 catching
the bugs I stirred up,sure wish I could go back there, but I know I'm too screwed up to ever climb onto a tractor again.Bob
God Bless

I am about to hook up my 5' brush hog for the first attempt at mowing, and wanted to ask for a recommendation from the more experienced users here.

I note that your brush hog is level -- but think I have read before that having it level like that means that the blades will be forced to cut "all the way around" (some call it cutting twice), resulting in a lot more load on the tractor. I believe the suggestion was to drop the front end lower than the back so that the mower only cuts at the front -- and it seems to me that this would also encourage the ejection of cuttings to exit at the rear (away from the driver) as well.

Do I have this right?

Thanks in advance for advise...

Reply to Ed in ON Canada. I keep mine a little lower in front for the reason you mentioned. I use stabilizer bars and limiter chains, the latter for rear height adjustment. Also use an ORC (overrunning coupler), which I trust you have as it let's you stop normally without getting pushed where you don't want to go--dangerous places. Also after stopping you're able to shift gears if you want to without gear grinding as the gears stop turning. Good Luck. Angelo

I really enjoy mowing for some reason. You aren't thinking about bills, problems, work, etc. - just mowing :-) Here is a shot my wife snapped of me with Rustbucket.

Enjoy your seat time.

Dan

Right on Dan, that is good thinking and problem solving time, plan making time, daydreaming time, at least it is fer me. Even make a wish or two now and then.

No need for superhuman strength once you own a tractor, all you need is a boom pole. Save your back for something better.

Lookin' good. Have fun workin' tomorrow. I park with 8N nose up high, then tighten the top link, then back to where the back wheels are high and block up the hog to sharpen blades. It usually requires me to lay down while doing it but it looks like I am working VERY hard when the wife sees me.
