So, there I am raking leaves and generally getting tired of the whole process when voila!
third party image

Californian Golden Chantrelles by the basket full!!!

this little batch would cost you about $50 or more at the store for some old dried out mushrooms.

There are more where these came from too!!!!

Just finished sauteeing off a small panful with butter.....truly delicious!!!

Dont try this at home unless you are confident in your mushroom identification skills..... ..... third party image

Yeah, the puffballs are not something I would rush out and eat -
Over in England my Dad enjoys walking the fields where the cows have been and picking the field mushrooms - good eating.

I normally stick to the few I know for absolutely sure are edible - we get a lot of boletes here (known as ceps in France I think) which are actually better dried then re-constituted - problem is that the maggots get to em right away.

One year my buddy took me to an area of the forest which had had a burn go through it the previous year....at first you could see nothing...then, like a miracle you started spotting Morels - by the bucket load..... sold a basket of them to the local French chef (who nearly fainted when he saw them) for about $100!!!

There are more non-poisonous mushrooms than poisonous - problem is, you get the wrong one and its either a very nasty bout of the squits with vomiting and stomach ache or, a nasty death!!!!

Dont eat any mushrooms unless you are absolutely sure what they are!!!!

In Washington and Oregon people get killed in the woods for encroaching on another mushroom hunters territory - most are Asian pickers for the commercial market.

Minnesotans north of the 46th protect their wild blueberry patches with similar ferocity. Well. Not quite. But they are highly prized, and no one in their right mind will tell you where his patch is. If you take someone, you must take a very circuitous route so that they don't remember the way the following year.

During the huge elm die-offs in the 80s, we would find a lot of morels. Not so many anymore. I'm sure they're still in our woods ... just not so easily spotted by inexperienced eyes. But they are great to eat!

Lee,

This fall we had a combination of lots of rain w/warm days. It brought out a huge crop of giant puffballs. We tried a couple of those. They were interesting, but ultimately not my cup of tea. They keep their fairly chewy "texture" after cooked, and have an incredibly strong smell of fungus. ;-)

Those sure aren't the kind we used to pick, back in the early '70s.

Me either - mine were darker brown, kinda thin, and seemed to like growing on cow manure early in the morning... :-)

Roland, I had a buddy that got some kinda mushroons and made a tea outta it. The next day he was throwing bread crumbs all over his carpeted bedroom floor. I asked him what an the heck are you doing. He said the cock roaches talked to him the day he had some of his tea. He said they are really cool critters and he asked em to stay outta certain parts of the house. Said yah gotta really take some time and listen to em and after a while you can understand them. Wasn't to many more months went by and he was droppin outta the local university we were attending. Those darn cock roaches will sure bring a man down fast!

That's hilarious!

I knew some 'shroomers back in school, but I don't recall any testimonials regarding cockroach conversations.
