The corner of the cover for the governor housing is cracked. A local mechanic aluminum welded the corner , filed the gasket surface flat again.I am thinking not to retap this as it appears to be a weak area anyway.Good idea / bad idea?

You didn't bother with the details of telling us side or front mount.. however.. john smith has used ones for both 20-40$ or so.

When I removed it from the engine,it was covered in oil / dirt and very hard to see that was a bolt coming from the bottom. I assume that a previous owner tried to remove the cover and thinking that he was just working against gasket cement, pulled with a little more umph than he should. I got burnt on a phishing scam with ebay a while back, don't quite trust it.Any other sources?

Ricky, Ebay can be a safe place to shop for used tractor parts. Just deal with the guys that you know are reputable. A lot of the 8N and 9N stuff is from the same stores we buy from off ebay. Like one mentioned here Wengers(spelling) is one for sure that sells on ebay. And I think even Dennis Carpenter sells there too. If someone sends you a fishy email supposedly from ebay check the source out before responding to it. I know I used to not ask questions and got stiffed once too. Put an add in here at YT and see if someone here has one. Put your old one back on till you stumble accross one at a show or something. I know it's doing the job twice but don't you love tinkerin with em anyways?

Ricky, As much as I hate to say it I think you would be better with another one. And as much as I hate to say it I saw one or a few on ebay for cheap. I'm just a fanatic when it comes to to welding up parts when you can still git one to replace it. Slap that one back on though and see if the weld holds good enough. What you figure broke this one anyways?
