I am rebuilding a 8n ford. The motor has had pistons installed at one time without sleeves. I need to know the OD of the "thick" .090 sleeves so i can get the block bored to fit these thicker sleeves... anyone have this spec?

Here's a Ford factory service bulletin on that subject. SERVICE LETTER
TRACTOR AND IMPLEMENT DIVISION
LETTER No. 2-T-11
TO: ALL DISTRICT OFFICES, PARTS DEPOTS AND DEALERS, ALL EXPORT COMPANIES
DATE July 29, 1952

REPLACING STEEL SLEEVES WITH CAST IRON SLEEVES 9N, 2N, 8N TRACTOR
REBORING SPECIFICATIONS
The 8N tractor engine fitted with steel sleeves has a bore diameter of

3.2684" Min.
----- ----- Mean Diameter of 3.2685"
3.2687" Max.

The steel sleeves have a mean wall thickness of .0375" and the cast iron sleeves have a mean wall thickness of .0897".

The new bore for cast iron sleeves is
3.3657" Min.
----- ----- Mean Diameter of 3.366"
3.3665" Max.

The amount of metal to be removed is
New Mean bore 3.3660
Old Mean bore 3.2685
Difference ----- .0975"

When reboring the block, the following cutting depths are recommended.

- First rough cut is 3.268" to 3.325". Metal Removed Approx. .057"

- Second rough cut is 3.325" to 3.364". Metal Removed Approx. .039"

- Finish cut is 3.364" to 3.366". Metal Removed Approx. .002"

Total metal removed is .098"

Before making the finish cut, it is advisable to check the diameter of the bore to ensure that .002" is the proper amount of metal to be removed to give a bore diameter of 3.366".

After making the finish cut, the counter bore should be made to accommodate the lip of the sleeve. The counter bore diameter and depth are

Diameter:
3.414” Min.
----- ----- Mean 3.415"
3.416" Max.

Depth .063" to .066"

The cast iron sleeve has an O.D. of

3.3670" Min. ----- ----- Mean 3.3674"
3.3678" Max.

New bore mean diameter is 3.366"

Press fit is .0014"

The range of a press fit should be between .0005" and .0021".

After the cast iron sleeves are installed, it will be found necessary in most cases to hone the sleeves to obtain the proper piston fit. Instructions for the procedure in fitting pistons in the cast iron sleeves will be issued in Service Letter 2-T-12.

I assume you are fitting the .090 sleeves - I can't imagine getting the proper fit on the .040 sleeves in a block that's run pistons directly in the bore. And if your motor was originally equipped with .090 sleeves and someone installed oversize pistons in that bore you may have issues as well.

The nominal OD for the thick wall sleeves is 3.1875 + .180 = 3.3675. The specified fit of .001 interference gives a finish bore of 3.3665. Since nothing is ever exact in the machinist's world you need a manufacturing tolerance for fitment - the rebore won't be exact and the OD of the new sleeves won't be exact. As Bob says the FO-4 specifies hand fitting each sleeve - i.e. rough bore and finish hone to proper fit. First thing to check is what you have in the way of block bore right now. You need to verify you can rebore to those tolerances.

A modern shop with good boring equipment can probably hold the .001 without need for finish honing so best if you give them the sleeves. Then they can mic and bore to fit.

The shop manual says to measure EACH new sleeve, and bore the block to provide a .001" interferance fit.

Make the counterbore depth so there will be .001" to .003" "sleeve standout", based on the measurement of the "lip" at the top of the sleeve..
