I've got a '48 8n in very good shape. Lately though it's developed a hesitation problem. When letting out the clutch in any gear (especially when pulling a load) or, when running and suddenly increasing the gas, there'll be a lot of hesitation. The tractor doesn't actually stall, but you think it will. Once moving, everything is fine. Am I looking at a governor problem? If so, what can I do to confirm it? Thanks all.

Try turning the large screw on the carb CCW, in in 1/2 turn increments and see if that changes anything. Keep up with how much you turn it, so that you can put it back where you started if that isn't it.

While it could be a gov problem.. it could also be a lean mainjet.. ( lean from mis-set.. or dirt obstruction. )

Try these 2 tests.. start her up, now manually goos the throttle rod to the carb.. see if the gov immediatly and smoothly fights you back.

Next, try your clutch out or throttle up test with a hair of choke. Help any.. if so. investigate the lean mix you have...

( vacume leak or fuel obstruction.. or fiddle-ed with carb mainjet adjustment.. )

My guess also,,, mite add if a little choke helps look for a fuel problem,,, I don't think a gov problem would make it feel like it shut down,,, fall on its face as we call it. I have a carb on the bench that for no reason under slite throttle it will fall on its face and die bout the time the gov pulls in a little under lite steady throttle lite load. "Putt" and its dead just like ya turned the switch off,,, It mite lay their till I am dead are run out of spair bullets. If y'all come 2 the auction after I die don't bid on the nice shinny red carb,,, I warned ya He he

I had one like that on a Massey this summer. After taking it apart the second time I noticed someone had left out the venturi. I got another venturi & it worked fine.

Yep.. if it does flat die out.. I don't think it is gov either.. but somewhere in fuel delivery.. etc.
