hi. Was putting my 1952 8N in the barn for the winter when it knocked off. Noticed an 1/8 inch air gap at the top of the sediment bowl. Gas tank was half fun and fuel cut off valve wide open. Next day installed new bowl screen and gasket. Now with gas tank half fun and fuel cut off valve all the way open can't get gas into the sediment bowl. Whats up with that? thanks in advance for any help and everone have a Merry Christmas!

If you remove plug at bottom of carb and catch gas in container you should see gas flow into sediment bowl. Bill

Would you believe its ok. All that is happening is the carb is full of gas and the float is working as it should. Now to prove this do this and see. Take a drinking straw and put your finger over the end of it. put it in a glass of water soda etc. Guess what the straw will not fill with the water. Why because the air holds it out. Same works on that sediment bowl. If you want it to fill start the tractor or pull the drain plug out the bottom of the carb. So what is happening is normal and is nothing to worry about unless when you start the engine it doesn't fill and then you have clogged screens or a sticking float

Screen and hole inside tank are plugged. Syphon out all the gas you can and take the whole sediment bowl out of the tank. You will still loose some gas down over the engine. If fire is an issue you will have to take the hood off and lay it on its side to get gas below the sediment bowl. There is a screen (filter) on the pipe that goes up inside the tank and also a hole lower that is the reserve that comes into play when you open the valve all the way. Both are plugged!!

Woops - miss read you info. Bruce is right. Not sure why you were even concerned about a little air in the bowl anyway and why have the valve all the way open and bypass your reserve and upper filter???

It won't fill with the bowl securely on because the float has closed the needle valve in the carb and there is nowhere for the air in the bowl to escape. When the engine is started the needle valve will open and the trapped air will escape through the carb vent. If you loosen the bowl, it will fill.....and leak.
