NAA Starter problem

I have a starter problem (I think) with my NAA.

When attempting to start it, the solenoid clicks and squeals a bit but the starter does not crank. This is indicative of past corroded battery terminals. But a cleaning the terminals and even replacing the battery hasn't solved the problem. Also has a new solenoid.

I have discovered this morning that by holding down the starter switch for a few seconds that the electrical connection on the starter gets warm (not hot).

I tried #43 of the 50 tips for N Owners this morning in an attempt "hot wire" it to get it started. Nothing.

What is confusing is that this is an intermittent problem. Two months ago I had the same problem and did a bunch of work - new battery, etc. Also took the starter in and had it tested. The report was that "it spins just fine."

Despite that report, my guess is that it is a starter problem but is looking for expertise beyond mine.

Thanks for the help.

Russ

Thanks to everyone for your helpful advice.

I began with the least expensive solutions and worked my way up to the more expensive. I don"t need to tell you the outcome - it was the most expensive fix that worked. It needed a new starter.

Again, thanks for all your advice.

Russ

You may have a hang up like Sound says or you might just plain have a starter going south on you. Next time you try to start it tap the side of the starter a few times with a hammer. Don't hit it real hard just a few sound taps. If it spins then you need to have it rebuilt.

If it ain't the cables.. other option is that it is hung int he flywheel, or isd otherwise locked up. try popping it with a hammer while holdingthe button.. may have to R&T it.. etc..

Russ - Time to get new battery cables. Sometimes they corrode back up under the insulation. Be sure to get the thickest cables you can find.
