Oil in radiator?

I recently purchased a Ford 8N. I'm nervous about finding "gunk" in the radiator. Seems to be oil to me, but friend (who knows more about tractors than i do) thinks its radiator stop-leak. I know that water in the oil is a serious problem, but oil in the radiator?... never even heard of this happening... anyone out there with any ideas?.... (I shudder to think of over-haul, my wife would kill me!)

With the engine stone cold, drain and flush the radiator and block(remove lower hose) and fill it with fresh coolant and run it for a few minutes and see what changes. Observe the flow by looking in the neck. Let it cool and look again and see if you have any residue floating in there.

The extent of your problem depends on just how much oil you found in the radiator. Dell is right about an "oil sheen" as being natural but when you get about a pint of oil floating on top when you go to start up then there's a real problem. I tried to take care of this discovery with a new head gasket to no avail. After tearing down the engine to find a crack that I just knew had to be there in the block I/we (the mechanic and I) found that the head was warped about .008 inch. A shaving took care of all my problems but I went ahead and took care of some other expensive repairs since I had gone that far.

RC..... .radiator stop leak and waterpump lubricant will all float some gunk and these products have been used to bandaide other problems.

Your sheen floating on top of you water could mostly be combustion by-products from a leaking headgasket. I would take a compression check, dry and wet, first. Even if unconclusive, Head gaskets are not that expensive. While I had the head off, I'd check it for warping, and if suspisious, take it to a machine shop to be milled, shaved, skimmed, whatever...

When you take you head off, you'll natchurally change your anti-freeze and get rid of all those snakeoil helpers, and make certain that you have a thermostat in the new upper radiator hoze.

But before you turn a wrench, ya' best have an I&T FO-4 repair manual handy, good info and pix's. Commonally available at most tractor supply stores, including Ford/New Holland. Also available from "www.n-news.com", great archive of all sorts of manuals available too. N-Newsletter is a good read too.

As for the wife, as I remind my wife, I'm the cheepest mechanic she'll ever hire, "will work for food" but I flunked "mind-reading".

Good Luck..... .Dell

I just bought a 2N with the same problem and was getting on the net to ask the very same question. If I have to rebuild the engine, my wife will bury me right next to you!

I will be monitoring the responses to your question this Memorial Day weekend. Best luck to both of us!!!!! !!!!

Well Guys,
What can I say that will make you feel better? I
did the same test with my 9-n but the results weren't stop-leak or just the radiator.I thought just the head gasket but came up with a crack in the block on #1 cylinder. To magnaflux the block
was not as bad but I did a complete remanufactured
short block to the tune of $1500 plus trade in on the old one. Hidden treasures after I bought it from my wifes' uncle.Who'd think a price was so good that I couldn't turn it down! It's a strong runner now. Good luck. TK
